2001 GT Brakes Problem...

I bought my GT a few months ago and ever since I have had it I have had a strang problem with the brakes. The problem is that when I slow to a stop, as I get down to a really low speed (under 5mph maybe?), there is this grinding, almost crunching type noise. At the same time, there is a bit of resistance on the brake pedal, almost like it backs your foot off the brake. I had my friend's dad who is a former mechanic drive it, he had no idea what the problem was, but he thought it might have something to do with the ABS system (even though the ABS light has never come on when this happened). The car has about 50,000 miles on it and had been doing it ever since I bought it (about 3 months now). If anybody has any idea as to what might be the problem, your input would be greatly appreciated.
