The GT500 breaking system is it enough?

The specs on the GT500 show it will have

BRAKES
Type: Four wheel power disc with 4-channel anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD) and traction control
Front: Brembo 14-inch diameter vented discs, four-piston aluminum calipers
Rear: 11.8-inch diameter vented discs, single-piston calipers

Ok so we know it will weigh in at right at 2 tons (3920lbs). The system seems to be nearly the same as the Mustang GT system. It has similar baby Brembos as the 2000 Cobra R. The rear rotors are the same as the V6 and GT as is the single-piston calipers of the V6 and GT.

The 2000 Cobra R had as stated above used similar front Brembo brakes but it weighed close to 350lbs more than the GT of that year and only stopped 5’ shorter from 60mph than the GT of that year. The GT500 weighs close to 500lbs more than the current GT. With all of this being known it is very likely that the GT500 with its slightly improved breaking system over the GT will at best be able to stop at the same 116ft from 60mph as the current GT but will more than likely be looking at a distance closer to around 120ft like the 2001 Cobra and last gen. GT.

We already know the current Mustang GTs breaking system is not up to snuff to the point that the system is easily fried around a real road course. With only a marginally improved system and significantly more weight I think that it will still not have enough breaking force to be sufficient on the track just like all Mustangs.

the rear brakes might not be real big, but 14" vented brakes are pretty damn big arent they. im not in a position to say if theyll last on a road course though. i think theyll do better than the gt though.

14" is a good size for a production Mustang the last R being the only other mustang to use brakes close to that size. But this car is larger than any mustang built in the last 30 years its nearly 350lbs more than the last R. Again it’s the overall bulk of this car that really affects it. The Brembo brakes will survive a weekend at the track but it is still under braked for a car of its size. It would still be under braked if Ford had kept the IRS and its rear 12.4” brakes with twin-piston calipers as seen in the Red IRS Mule but it would be better off.

Let’s take a look at the 300C SRT8 it is 4160 lbs and has a braking distance of 113ft from 60mph. This is thanks to the Brembo four pistons calipers found on the 14” vented rotors up front and the 13.8” vented rotors in the rear. See how important the rear brakes can be? The 300C SRT8 stops 2’ shorter than the last R did even though it weighs over 550lbs more than the R.
