I havea 92 Olds, Achieva and very sudenly it just woudlnt Move Fast. The car goes very slowly no matter how much you give it Gas, the RPM's do not go up except very randomly when full throttle. it wille ventually get up to speed but as soon as you slow down it takes forever to get to speed.
Here is what I know is wrong.
Sputtering While in Idle (Anything but neutral), Noise from Muffler Car Shakes.
Car Sounds fine in Neutral
Gas can be to the floor but the car doesnt change RPm's or speed, slow up hills and slow to get up to speed.
I had it checked at the transmission shop and they said the didnt think it was the transmission but wanted me to get spark plugs and a new Harness (Big Black plastic peice plug boots go into) for them. They were going to charge me 300 to replace so I did it on my own for 50. After replacing plugs and harness it seems to go a little faster but still is acting up.
I am not getting any engine lights. Actually tonight was the first time I noticed them on temporaily. and that was the Check Gauges, Check Oil light.
Transmission fluid is full and a redish color (Not Burnt at all), Oil is full, Air Filter is clean.
Oh and there is a lot of gas smell. and Just driving to the Car Shop took almost half a tank.
I do not recall anything else that would be helpful, I was told I need to get motor mounts. a few weeks ago, but other then that there is nothing wrong with the car.
Thanks for your help with this and e-mail me with any questions...
Marcus

So I took it to get the computer codes looked at and I got two. MAP Sensor and Right 02 Sensor I replaced them still no help, I decided to take it to the mechanic to check the converter, about half way there smoke was coming out of the back of the car, and my oild pressure was getting low? any ideas so I know what to expect from the mechanic?

I've seen severely stopped up converters cause O2 and MAF codes. The low oil pressure was probably caused by overheating. As for the smoke...I dunno. Maybe the converter cooking it's "inards"..?

The Mechanic said that it is running on two cylinders and that two spark plugs are not firing, and they are wet with gasoline. HE cannot figure out why they are not firing, any ideas?

Does your mechanic know how to troubleshoot a firing system? If the cylinders that are missing are on the same coil pack, then more than likely the coil pack is bad, although I have seen the coil be good, but the ignition control module go bad. He should know how to test the coils and the ICM.....

I replaced the coil Pack, before I took it to the mechanic. so i am not sure if that is it.

The igntion control module could also be bad. It can be checked with a 12volt test light.

I also have a 92' Achieva. It is an Achieva SL 3300 V6. I am having the EXACT same problem. Do you have the same model as I?

OK so heres the deal I took it to the mechanic who really just owns a tow place he took two weeks he siad he finally took it to the junkyard and swapped out the entire top of the engine thats Coils, Coil, Pack Spark plugs and ICM I think it is the ICM the box that sits right under the coil pack... I took it home and noticed it was still having problems although it was running smoother just more random, as opposed to constant. Smoke still came out of the back of the muffler.
I Immediatly drove it back and called the mechanic because he was not in the shop he said I have to run it because it is flooded and it is going to run that way till I clean it out. I am worried about driving the car with white smoke coming out of it, I dont want to do more damage then I have to. Pleas elet me know if this seems to make sense or not. I kind of dont trust it.

You really should try replacing the catalytic converter. I am going to do it. Based on what I've read about bad cat symptoms other places, this seems to fit all of them. My engine seems to be running fine. It isn't loud, but there is a rumbling in the exhaust system. When the exhaust passes through the muffler it smells terrible and contains bad smoke, not to mention being loud. I don't know much about cars, but this tells me that somewhere between the exhaust being expelled from the engine to the exhaust being expelled from the muffler that there is something wrong.
When I have the chance to replace it, I will post back here with results.

White smoke isn't a good sign...

So I took it to another Mechanic and he said that it is definatly the engine, and that I would be better off getting a new car for the price. So off to the classifieds I go....
