What kind of Sycromesh to use?

last night it was 3 degrese in Pennsylvania, so i went to go start my car to go to work, 1st and 2nd gear were fine but everyother gear was impossable to find!, hopfully this sycromesh works.... but heres my question.


what kind of sycromesh should i use in my 1g gsx? theres gm,pennsoil and alot of different kinds w/ different prices, which ones have you guys had the best luck with? also how many quarts should i buy to fill up my 1g gsx? becuase my haynes manual dont say, thanks.

That would mean its a 90-94 Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX...

Get pennzoil synchromesh. You can find it at autozone. I use it, love it. Get 3 bottles. Fill it when the car is level and stop filling when it runs out of the fill hole. (thats what she said...)

The OEM replacement can be had at the chrysler dealership, Chrysler Part No. 4874464. I've heard real good things about the Pennzoil/Quakerstate Synchromesh fluid.

It has an approximate gear oil grade of about SAE 80W and can be used when temperatures range from -40ºF (-40ºC) to 300ºF (150ºC). A post on the message board at www.oilanalysis.com (http://www.oilanalysis.com/) found Synchromesh to consist of a ** 5W30** non-detergent oil with a friction modifer and an EP (extreme pressure) additive. It is made under contract for General Motors by Pennzoil (APC 3378) or by Texaco (Code 1874 MTX Fluid).

According to Don Johnson, Synchromesh fluid was developed for use in the New Venture manual transmission used by Chrysler and General Motors. Specifically, Synchromesh is formulated for transmissions that require GM Part No. 12345349 (Specification No. 9985648), GM Part No. 12345577, or Chrysler Part No. 4874464 (Specification MS-9224). Owners of Diamond Star Motors (DSM) Eclipse, Talon, and Laser cars with MMC (Mitsubishi Motor Corporation) transaxles have reported positive experiences using Synchromesh. The same can be said for owners of the Mitsubishi 3000GT and Dodge Stealth cars with the Getrag-manufactured AWD transaxles. The main benefit to DSM and 3/S owners seems to be excellent synchronizer performance, with reduced grinding and easier shifting compared to using some other gear oils.

Pennzoil Synchromesh Fluid can be purchased as that brand or as the equivalent products: Quaker State Synchromesh (Quaker State is part of Pennzoil), Texaco Synchromesh, GM Synchromesh, or AC Delco Synchromesh (part number 89021808). GM Synchromesh retails for about $10 per quart bottle at GM dealerships. Pennzoil Synchromesh is sold at many Auto Zone auto parts stores for about $5 per quart and should be available from Pennzoil distributors.

John Shepperd believes that running the synchromesh straight is too thin to provide enough protection. With all the trannies he tears down I'm inclined to trust his judgement. It changes every year or so, but his latest recomendation for DSM transmissions is 1 quart Shockproof Heavy and the rest Penzoil synchromesh. If this doesn't shift well enough in cold weather, you could increase the proportion of synchromesh to thin it out. In the summer I wouldn't run the stuff straight though.

In the EVO he recomends straight synchromesh, but I don't trust it, and I don't know why the recomendation is different. Last summer I ran half quart of heavy to the rest penzoil, but in cold weather I'm running it straight since it stays thicker, and I'm not racing.

It's more of an art than a science sometimes. Just gather the facts, listen to the poeple that work with this stuff day in and day out, come to some conclusion, and then try it out.

I used straight synchromesh in my tranny and it completely detroyed it. Shepherd rebuilt my tranny and he suggested not running straight synchromesh like I did. Like 95 GSXracer said, the guy is known for his trannys... I'm taking Shepherds word for it. lol

I too use the synchromesh/shockproof mix. And it shifts fine in the cold.

okay i just went to advanced auto today and got 3 quarts of Pennsoil sycromesh.... it took about 2 1/2 or a little under to fill it up, WOW my transmission feels brand new again i have NO grinding and i can now again change gears at 3500rpms........ i love this shit
