Well i thought it has been a while since the trans fluid was changed in my truck, so today i did it. It smells like burnt plastic, and its black. Think i did any damage, what can i do from here on out besides regular maintance to keep this trans alive for another bunch of miles? Thanks.

Not much you can do, except change the fluid more often and cross your fingers. I change mine every 40-50,000 miles. I don't do much "hard driving" with it except pull a 16' aluminum fishing boat a couple times a year.

If it is in that bad a shape I would get it flushed to get ALL of the old fluid out. Simply changing the fluid and filter helps get the crud out of the bottom of the pan but you are only changing a small part of the burnt fluid out. Now that you have a new filter(assume you do) take it to a good trans shop and have a fluid exchange done.

I have it all back together and still same nasty brown looking trans fluid, it took a little over 4 qts. If i run it for another 5K and change it again will this have all the nasty crap out or is a trans flush necessary, I've heard bad things about doing that. Thanks

Since you just changed the filter I would think that just a Mr Lube style flush should be fine. They pump the system out, but don't change the filter.
I hope that you used a quality filter. If it was a cheapy you might not want to try this. (I wouldn't want it to fall apart if it's possible)
Then do another oil/filter change in 20,000 miles or so.

Go get the fluid swapped out.
It will do no harm, it is completely passive and swaps in new fluid immediately and in 5 minutes.
The flushes are not forced, they only use the transpump to pump in the new fluid and the old fluid out through the cooler lines.
I did it this summer and it went perfectly.

You're all talking about those "Trans-T" type flushes where the machine is merely a coloumn of oil in a chamber with a piston inside of it. Oil pessure from the coolant lines forces fluid into one side of the chamber, moving a plug from one side to the other. The other side of the plug is loaded with fresh fluid. Starting the engine and letting it idle in neutral does all the work, no forced flushing, solvents, etc. involved...just straight fresh fluid replenishment. There is a local place that uses a Trans-T setup that is completely passive - I have no argument over those types of fluid flushes at all. I do it ghetto style with a fitting adaptor put into my tranny cooler in the rad and pouring fresh fluid in as fast as it comes out - or using a hand operated pump to siphon out the pan. I do at least a 3 quart swap inthis manner every 12,000 miles, keeping the fluid clean and clear. At 32,000 miles, I drop the pan and replace the filter, gasket(s), etc. and top up what was lost when doing that. The ultimate ghetto style tranny service, IMO - which has never, *ever* landed me in trouble with a transmission to date. Fresh fluids every other oil change and a new filter and gasket every three years or so is gonna be your best bet, better yet if you figure out how to do it yourself to save you from making yacht payments at your dealership or independant mechanic's garage. ;)
