I am having some problems with this grand prix sometimes the key doesnt come out of the ignition, tried everything, shifter in position, lights off, windows up,I have to start it a few times before it comes out.sometimes it doesnt come out at all. I had the security light on and a GM shop reprogramed the keys so the light is off now. I also had an engine light on and the shop said that moisture was building up in the exhaust right below the oxygen sensor causing this problem, have anyone else had these problems. whats a fix for this problem can you guys help me thanks

The key release is part of the BTSI system (brake transmission shift interlock). When in park a solenoid (shift interlock) in the console sends a signal to a key release solenoid in the steering column. See link below:

On the 02 sensor which one before the CAT or after?

The o2 sensor after the cat, the exhaust shop said there is a dip or some type of bend in the pipe that water collects in and causes to sensor to get false readings which turns on the engine light, and as far as the key problem I read all the other posts in the link you included, it was helpfull but there are so many other possible problem and I dont know where to start. thank you

That "dip" in the exhaust is after the O2 sensor, that's not the problem. The downstream O2 sensor monitors catalyst efficiency. Check for burnt/chaffed wires and bad connections.. If the wiring look good, suspect a failing converter or a faulty sensor.

I am going to take a look at the sensor tomorrow and I think I am going to replace it because I had it scanned and it showed catalyst low efficiency so the sensor is probably the problem. do you have any idea as to what the problem is with the key thank you for you help

You can replace the sensor but there is a high probability the CAT is flaky especially if it is a P0420 DTC error code.
Also make sure you use an OEM AC Delco replacement 02 sensor and not an aftermarket such as Bosch.
You are aware that GM delivered 2001 - 2002 Grand Prixs with flaky CATS? The CAT emissions warranty was extended to 10 years or 120K miles, whichever comes first. So the dealer should replace it free of charge if the CAT is confirmed defective and you are within the warranty coverage.

Permanent fix...
This problem can be solved with a little work. The main culprit is the lock, so eventually you should buy a replacement lock/key set from a dealership. The actual ignition electrical switch is located on the steering column a little lower down underneath the dashboard on the columns top side. A long steel rod runs from the ignition lock to the switch. If the key will not completely turn off everything all you should need to do is locate the ignition switch, loosen the screws holding it on, and adjust its position in order for it to work properly. It is designed with elongated holes to allow adjustment. You will need to remove some of the lower dashboard panels and remove the two nuts holding the steering column in place, but if you have some aptitude and the tools, it should only take you about 30-45 minutes. Good Luck
Temporary fix to get the key out..
I found that same problem with my '03 GP, if you dont want to go through all that work, there is a button on the tumbler inside of the steering column that you can reach with your finger and then the key will return to the off position fully. What you need to do is tilt the steering wheel all the way up and underneath in the lower right hand corner is a hole. stick your finger in there and curl it back toward yourself the button is there you need to apply pressure up toward the steering wheel with the back of your finger. the button should press easily, (if you put your fingertip on the screw that holds the bottom plastic piece on then you should be able to feel the button with your thumbnail and try to turn the key off.) although it may take a while to find it.; Hopefully it works for you.
