2000 Buick heater problem

I have 2000 Buick Century. Just recently the heater stopped working. The Blower is blowing but the air is cold. The temp gage acts a little weird as well. It seems to get pretty close to hot then all of the sudden shoots down to normal. I am thinking that it may be the thermostat, but would that also make the heater blow cold air. Any help that you can provide would be appreciated. Thank you

Check the coolant level.
Is it full of coolant?
If so check the thermostat and feel the heater inlet and outlet hoses and see if they are hot.

Glad you have heat. But you need to watch that coolant level close because you may have a leak some place.

Hey george1073. FYI - to post a new thread just click the 'New Thread' button at the top of the page under the car category you want. For example if you want to post for Century get into the Century page to do this. This button will not appear once you are into a thread on that particular page, only under the vehicle 'home' page. Also, as far as your blower motor...it sounds to me like you need a new one. Whining and squealing usually indicate that due to wear internally. You can test the switch and resistor to check those 'less expensive' avenues first, but you didn't mention only having a few(or one) speeds as a resistor will commonly cause. However you may have a switch that's on it's way out. In my opinion, it sounds like you may have a bearing or brushes going bad in the motor itself and that's what's causing the noise. Give it a few taps w/ a rubber mallet(if you can get to it) when it's acting up to see if it quiets it down, or helps it speed back up. If so, you need a motor. I had a very similar issue w/ my Tahoe a while back. The blower worked fine most of the time but sometimes it simply wouldn't turn on and sometimes after it was running for a while it would 'wind itself down'. By 'tapping' it w/ the mallet(as w/ a starter that won't turn), I got it to wind back up, but in the end I did replace the motor because it became a PItA. I hope this helps. I am having air issues. We put the freon in and that was fine but now the air still wont blow cold Could it be the thermostat? Please help me because it is hot in Louisiana :-)

You should start your own thread, and not jump on an 8 year old one......thermostat has nothing to do with air conditioning....

I take it, you had no cooling .......so you added freon.......does the compressor run when the a/c is turned on? If it does is the low side line cold to the touch? Do your cooling fans run?

Did you check your temp door operation? Turn your system on in the vent position....this won't turn the compressor on...with the temp on your gauge of the car around 200F, turn temp to full hot..... air coming out of the vents should be around 145-160F.....now turn to full cold....temp should drop to outside ambient air......if it does, then the temp door is functioning....

If the line is cool, not cold, you might need to add more freon......the problem with adding freon from a can is, when pressures equalize, no more freon will flow out of the can.....a newer fresh can will have more pressure in it.....you attach it to the low side........when the compressor runs, then you crack the can open, and the freon should be sucked out of the can.....most of these cans come with a gauge setup.....you don't want to add too much....that's why I crack the line for a few seconds and then close the can......then I feel that low side line...if still not cold, then I add a little more......then let the system run and feel that lowside line....when that line is cold and air is cool coming out of the registers, stop.....key is, add the freon in increments, allowing the system to equalize to it's normal pressure.....

One other thing you can try, is put a wet hot towel around the can.......the heat will be absorbed by the freon, creating more pressure in the can.....with higher pressure in the can, it will flow into the system......

I don't know how much A/C experience you have......you have to be careful....should wear protective goggles, gloves, and never attach the hose while the system is running......
