Is Cat back enough?

I wanna make my car have a nice deep, loud rumble....the kind that lets people know you could peel the asphalt off the ground if you peeled out....question is, if i instal a cat back exaust system, will that alone give me that sound. I want it to sound good....i don't want the "i just gut off the muffler" sloppy sound....and i don't want it to be so loud that it becomes a menace to the town. I just want it loud enough to draw attention and envy. If cat back is the way to go, whats a good brand? Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

for lound, nice deep sounding i recomend flowmaster, and i would also put headers on, it will give you ALOT deeper sound, a high flow cat would be a good idea also.

Avoid Flowmaster. They sound okay but flow for crap.

I like Magnaflow...but some people say they are too quiet. I like being dosile at idle and mean at wide open throttle. Plus they flow with the best of them.

ya, but he just wants sound, so for a deep sound flowmaster has it, i think magnaflow is to quiet, sounds like stock at an idel.

If you are not overly concerned with price then you would be hard pressed to beat GMMG. I consider this the absolute best sounding catback. It also flows very well and the tips look mint.

But you will pay $700 for this kind of quality. If your budget is a tad tighter then the TSP Rumbler is IMO the best sounding bang for the buck catback out there. Just be warned that this type of setup can be VERY loud and raspy with LT headers and ORY. But with stock manifolds and cats this sounds like music to most peoples ears.

If you plan on headers down the road then I think Magnaflow will suit your needs very well.

thanks for all the help everyone, now one more question. Say i wanted to get a little HP out of it as well.....any exaust system out there that will get me sound and power without tampering with the cats or headers.

The only catback that won't give you a decent power gain is Flowmaster. Generally speaking you can expect 7-10 rwhp gains from any other catback. Loudmouth, loudmouth 2 and TSP rumbler tend to give the highest gains because they don't use a muffler but rather a more straight through resinator or bullet.

But they are close enough that I would pick it by how you like the sound. Here is a link to some catback/exhaust setups. Play with this a bit and see which you like best. Just be sure to listen to cars without headers since it does not sound like you're heading that way.

Good luck.

I went with true 3" duals, x-pipe, and billet mufflers.

Gets installed Wednesday.

My vote would go to hooker..I just replaced a slowmaster with a new hooker aerochamber catback, and it sounds just as good, but with a lower rumble, the flowmaster sounded kinda raspy on my car..it did sound good, but I prefer the hooker sound plus it flows just as well as the magnaflow..:evillol:

Awesome pic Darren!!!

It is costing me less than a y-pipe and a catback.

A catback means you get the muffler plus all the pipes from the catalytic converter(s) all the way back to and including tips. This is usually an upgrade to 3" pipes vs the old stockers that are 2.5" I believe for LT1's and 2.75" for LS1's. The only other option is to just buy a muffler and have it welded in place of the stocker. If you bought the car with a Flowmaster and want to know if you have a catback or just the muffler then all I can say is look under the car.

If the I-pipe, muffler, tips, ect looks a little newer/bigger then the Y-pipe then you definately got a full catback. If the flowmaster muffler looks like it's been welded in and all the pipes look older then you got a muffler only.

Did you watch the clip in my sig??

If so...it was literally wide open. Open headers.
Set-up is completely different now, and I will have more sound clips up once I get my tune figured out.
