Headlight Switch

hey if I replace my stock 1999 headlight switch with a switch from a 2001, would I then be able to push the dome over-ride button in a few times and make it so i have control over my headlights??? my buddy has a 01 and if u push the botton in 4 times with-in 6 seconds the automatic head lights go out and you have control over it. so since the button for the over-ride and the headlight switch are in the same unit, couldn't i just get a new unit from a 2001-2003 and it would work?? or are the connections different or anything?

I would think that the truck's computer would control that not the actual headlights.

I don't think if you replace the switch that the functionality will be there. Like Nigel says it's more about the Computer on board. If you want to bypass your Automatic headlights check out the wiring diagram in my gallery.

I told another 02 Silverado owner about the dome override thing; and he didn't know about it.

He was in the military; and when going on base (Dim lights) he would push his E brake down just enough to get the lights to turn out.

Not sure if you can then turn them on with the switch; but it worked for him.

the wire schematic doesn't show the lighting system going through the computer so it should work. Also, the e-brake thing doesn't work. i tried it the other day when i was going on base

Unfortunately, when the e'brake is down even just a notch the bell dings continously if your in motion. Just bypass the automatic lights by wiring in a switch with a resistor of the light sensor wiring that goes to the BCM. If your trying to disable you auto lights.

the e-brake thing is for pre '99. As for the swaping out the switch..., unless you change the wiring, as soon as you shut the truck off, it resets the lightswitch and you need to hit the dome overide again the next time you get in. Might as well let the truck turn them on when it wants and then turn them off when the need arises. I dont understand why everyone wants to control the lights manually anyway..... when it gets dark, you need lights... one less thing for you to do.

You'll have to either change out the BCM (Body Control Module) with one from an '00 - '02, or have the '99 bcm reprogrammed at the dealer. Either way, the switch does nothing for this. You can use the 99 switch, you just have to have the computer altered. its located under the steering wheel.

I have a resistor wired in mine so they don't come on at all unless I turn them on. I completely unhooked the sensor on the dash.

It would be nice if you could easily overide the auto function. Say, if the light switch had "auto" "off" "running lights" "park" and "headlight" options. Also, in the auto mode there should be an indication of what lights are turned on. It's annoying when the operator is left out of the operating decision loop.

I have both options on mine. I wired my 1999 Silverado so that I could have it in Auto mode or bypass the Auto setting and use the switch. (Complete Control!)
I wired a micro switch to the BCM that Parallel's the light switch.

I have Green Leds in my headlights and the only way to view them at night is to override the Automatic Headlight function. So I flick the toggle switch and all my lights shut off and the Green LeDs are apparent.

Hmm. I'd like to add the switch to mine. I have the resistor wired in with mine and they stay off unless I want them on....

But I guess I basically have the same thing...w/o an auto option of course
