So recently i noticed a clunking sound whenever i make a tight turn, so i jacked up my 2000 bravada and noticed that the CV BoOt is torn. Can any body give me some advice on what to have change by my mechanic. I read thru many post concening the topic, some say change the CV joint and boot, while other says change the whole axle. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. How much do this job usually cost.

P.S Any mechanic near the Boston, Ma area?

6 to one half a doezen to the other, let the machanic get in there (if its one you know and trust) and see if it needs the cv (constent volacity (sp!)) joint or a whole axil

Once the boot has been torn, it's best to replace the entire axel. (They're about 60 bux). The reason is that the grease has become contaminated with debri and probably have worked it's way into the joint by now.

If you don't want to go the proper route and go the cheap/dangerous fix route, you can buy boots by themselves with zip sleeves on them from most autoparts stores.

I would recommend a new joint or axle assembly.

I would recommend the whole axle replacement too. If you're hearing clunks and pops when you turn, the joint's already dried out, slung out all of the grease and ingested a ton of dirt, erroding the races, etc. Just about any shop in my area doesn't charge that much more for whole new axles, it's cheaper when you consider rebuild time vs. swap out time. The places I shop also warranty the axle for life when replaced, but only give 90 days on a rebuilt set of joints. The choice is up to you, but I would put dollars against donuts the entire swap would be more beneficial at this point in your case.
