Here's the fix for steering clunk. Unfortunately, you have to pay for it as it isn't from GM.
I listed the link below:

The Gm Lube Kit worked nicely for me.

yeah that fixes it for 15000km then it clunks again when the grease thins and seeps out, so you bring it back and they then put in an upgraded shaft and in another 30000 km it clunks again at which point GM says its normal and won't cause any adverse or saftey problems, but they will regrease again if you want but you will have to pay for it.. At least thats my experience with this issue. I've got one ordered up already and they guaranteed it will fix the problem forever.

Spend your money as you like, of course. But in less time than an oil change, an once of grease(reuse the kit) and a chance to reaquaint yourself with your truck, I can certainly regrease it every 15K.

Maybe the lack of puncuation confused me but are you saying that the replacement shaft only works for a little bit? I just replaced the pitman arm and idler arm on my truck (stupid things were worn out already, my tires were feathering on the outsides so I jacked it up and had all sorts of play in there) and it tightened up my steering like you wouldn't believe! It almost totally removed (or hid) that steering column clunk. I can still feel it here and there, and I was thinking of having it done, if it lasts.
Thanks

Forget greasing the steering shaft, only a temporary solution..Just spring to replace the steering shaft only about 75 bucks..I did it recently, clunk is gone and steering is tight as ever..Was done by dealer for this price as well..

Can anyone answer me this question....

If I get the replacement steering shaft part installed in my truck, would that in any way throw my alignment out of whack? I just replaced the pitman arm and idler arm on my truck and it knocked my toe alignment from here to Japan and I just paid to have everything put back where it should be. My next move was going to be getting the replacement part but if it's going to throw my alignment off it's gonna wait!

Thanks

No problem there.
But one word of caution. Lock your steering wheel straight ahead and keep the wheels straight ahead when you install it.
If you do not or turn the steering wheel when it is unhooked good by clock spring for air bag .

just a question, mine only seems to clunk when it warm out. if the temperature outside is below 0 celcius or 32 farenheit it does not clunk. is this the same problem or should i be looking for something else.

I talked to a friend of mine that I haven't seen for a few years last night and found out he works for a GM dealer and can get me the replacement shaft for his discounted price. He said he got one for his 99 Silverado and his parents 02 tahoe and he installed them in each in under 10 minutes in his driveway. He said neither vehicle has had a clunk or vibration since. Looks like I got lucky here!

Is the steering clunk a series of pops and thumps when turning the wheel?

My truck makes a knock on the drivers side. Mostly when I hit bumps. Is this the cluck everyone talks about or could that be the suspension?

For me, it only happened when I was turning into a driveway or going over a bump while turning. It was a clunk that you could feel in the steering wheel. At first I thought it was suspension but could not find any worn out parts. Eventually found this forum and bought the lube kit to fix it. So far, it has not come back.

How hard was the lube kit to use? How long did it take?

That must be what I have. I can feel it in the wheel too and I thought it was suspension. Is this just an annoyance or is it something that will break if not fixed?

Nothing will break it just drove me nuts. The lube kit was $15 at the local dealership. You need to remove the intermediate steering shaft to lube the shaft. Directions were included in the kit. Basically one bolt in the engine compartment and one both under the steering column. Becareful not to turn the steering wheel while the shaft is out.

It was about 20 minutes to do. The hardest part is the bolt under the steering column. You have to work on your back; otherwise a very straight forward job.

Some have had the shaft replaced under warranty. For me, it was not worth the hassle to drop off the truck, get a ride to work, get a ride back, pick it up. For $15, I was doing it myself. But that is the way that I am.

I might have it at home. When I went to the dealer to get it. I just asked for the lube kit for the intermediate steering shaft. The parts guy then asked if I wanted it for a car or truck. The truck version uses black grease which I guess is thicker for trucks.

I will look later tonight at home to see if I have a part number.

Where the heck did you get that for $75? I have called 2 dealers, and they want $175 for the shaft, $219 installed.

BTW, I did grease my shaft earlier
