'66 Mustang Convertible

Heya everybody,
This is actually my first american car that I am building. I'm actually building it for my father in law, he's a mustang fan.
This will also be my first AMT kit I have built, I have to say after 10+ years of building Tamiya and Fujimi kit's. I'm not impressed with the moulding quality, but it makes the build alot more satisfiying once it is done.

Of course no-one that I could find makes a convertable '66, so I got a hard top and chopped off the roof.

Sorry for the quality of the pics, I think the batteries must be getting low.
If anyone has any tips on this kit, it would be greatly appreciated.

Nice work so far. I did the same conversion for a friend about 20 years ago, maybe longer. Nobody then did a '65 convertible, I had to wing it w/the '66. Painted it light blue metallic w/a black interior. My friend still has it in a showcase.

The Monogram 1/24 scale '65 Mustangs are better kits (they've done convertible, fastback, and various Shelbys), but I'm not sure if they do any '66's or not...but really only the grille is the most noticeable difference, and the center of the gas cap in back is silver instead of black.

To be fair to AMT, that 1966 Mustang kit first came out in 1966. Their 1967 Mustang GT (and the accompanying GT350/GT500 Shelby kits) is a much better and quite well detailed modern kit.

You've done good work on the cutting. Are you planning on redoing the interior with the rear seat doglegs?

Thanks for pointing that out, I did'nt think of the age of the moulds.
As for the rear seat doglegs, I'm am not sure what you are talking about.
I'm guessing they have something to do with the roof?

Convertible rear seats are narrower than those of hardtops because of protrusions from the convertible top well. These protrusions house the folding top mechanism and are called "doglegs".

I see, I will have to do some more research. Also time is not on my side.
I have to complete this project by mid march and I am out of the country for 4 weeks on buisness. :(

Painted the first coat of X-4 Blue (enamel)

And puttied the needed areas with Tamiya putty.

Does anyone have pics of a similar engine that has wiring, I wanna get this pretty bang on. I'm aready redoing the Dizzy as it is a bit small.
