You want to hear a shitty dealer story?
I found a BEAUTIFUL, rare 1989 300ZX Turbo online...like...6 months ago. I drove about 3 hours to look at it and to drive it under the pretense that they'd finance me if I put a little money down. This was no problem for me. Even after the ~3 hr journey, over the course of which I lost $140 (7 $20 bills disappeared out of my pocket somewhere along the way...), they decided to go back on their word and tell me that they didn't want to finance me because I live a slight distance away...which they KNEW prior to me wasting my time and money going all the way up there. This made me furious. Well...this was around 6 months ago and the car is STILL available. I know the car is on the internet and it's a beautiful car (I've had 3 cars just like it so far, currently drive one now, too...I know them well) so the only reason they haven't sold it is because of the dealer it's at. I would love nothing more than to go throw the cash in their face and nuke the tires on the way out of their parking lot.
Anyone have $3500? I'll pay you back $4000...lol...I want the damn car so bad...now because of spite, too. I'm not going to go into too much detail about the place cuz it'll make this post forever-long. They did some other shady, ass hole crap while I was there, too. Sure it's not the worst story you've ever heard, but I drank some vodka and I can't stop thinking about it. lol

Can you get financing at a local bank or credit union? That would be a better idea than the dealer financing. A lot of the time, financing through a local bank or credit union gives you a better rate, and if you're a good customer, they might be willing to work with you if you have problems with your credit, or other issues that might make you less desirable to a dealer's finance department.

I tried that at one bank in the past. The car I tried for then was about 5 years NEWER then the car in question now and they still wouldn't do it...well...sorta. It's INSANELY difficult to finance a car that is older than...like...4 months old, apparently (damn depreciation). They had the value for the car (a ~1994, low mileage, Twin Turbo 300ZX worth at LEAST 8500 bucks to anyone with half a fucking brain) in their little book set at something retarded like...two grand or something. I could have gotten that much but then I would have had to come up with the rest. Kinda defeats the purpose of getting a loan.
I'm sure the most the banks would give me for this car, being an "old, ancient, decrepid, run-down heepashit antique from waaaaaaaaaaaay back in 1989", would be...like...$3.86, 2/3 of a 6-pack of Old Milwaukee Ice Lite, and a flick in the forehead if I was lucky.
Basically, I wasn't even going to try but maybe I'll look into it...hell...why not...

My credit union offers used car loans and theycover all years, I guess they take into consideration other factors, such as condition, mileage, and rarity of the car, and not only the "book value" when determining some loans. Quite a bit of the members of our credit union have financed purchases of classic cars, and cars soon to be classic. I guess it depends on certain factors, such as prior history of similar loans, the default rate on these and other similar loans, and the borrower's credit history, and how well they have been a member. Maybe there are other type of loans, whether they be secured or unsecured that you could get to finance the car, (like a personal loan.)

I'd think it'd be easy to get such a small amount of money for such a rare car that's in such great condition. I could probably talk them into letting me have it for 3,000-3,500 just cuz they've had it so long...4,000 worst-case-scenerio...it's listed at 4500.
Bit more insight about this car. They only made 4,165 of these in '89. That's TOTAL PRODUCTION for ALL of these cars in 1989! Take into consideration the fact that it's a turbo with a manual trans and a black interior [my favorite] and how slim the odds of finding another car anything even CLOSE to this EVER again becomes apparent...all this said without mention of the mods that have been done to it as well.

Lowered...nice rims...hi performance tires with good tread left...good paint...nice interior (even though a couple panels need replaced...easy and cheap to find and do)...has an electric fan installed...has a blow off valve installed...has aftermarket exhaust...has high flow intake...maybe more...I didn't get to look at it TOO well.
Plus, this would be the IDEAL candidate to accept the engine I'm building down the road.
It really couldn't be any more perfect and I've seen a LOT of these cars in my ~6 years experience with them.
I've tried to go the unsecured route, too. I don't have good enough credit to get an unsecured personal loan.

You could also look into a personal loan. Sometimes the rates are cheaper and you could do whatever you want with it.

Again, I've already tried that. My credit isn't good enough. You have to have prety good credit to pull of an unsecured loan...even though it's...like...a tiny little spec of money.
Honest to God, I'm thinking about putting the fucker on LAY AWAY!!! lol...they said I could do this and, at the time, I thought "who the FUCK would do that?", but I dunno...it may not be too bad of an option as long as they didn't say it had to be paid off in...like...6 months or something stupid like that. However doable that might be, it would put quite a bit of stress on my budget. I'd have to crunch some numbers to see if it'd be practicle or not for sure. Depends on how much I could talk them down on the price.
I still get a huge kick out of the fact that they STILL haven't sold it. But I know as soon as I get ready to do something, they'll sell it...that's my luck. I'd be pretty pissed.

Are u sure about a personal loan. I only have fair credit and i got approved for a $7,500 dollar loan with 3.5% interest. How many places have you gone to?

I went to a couple. My credit isn't quite up to "fair"...
I wish I could get one. Honestly, I'm reluctant to go to any more or many more places cuz A) I really don't have much faith that I'd be able to get one and B) every time I try again, it goes against my credit...why make it worse when I don't really think I'll be able to get one anyway.
It's a visious [sp.] cycle.
I'll look into trying again, anyway...who knows...I don't need much. Part of me thinks it's less a matter of whether or not I'm actually able to and more a matter of me just being able to find the right place. If I could do this without applying everywhere in Cincinnati, thereby slaughtering my credit (or lack there of) even further, I would.

The dealer's excuse for not financing you is BS, just because you live a "slight distance away." They must have some other reasons. In my area, dealers make sales all the time from people who live 150+ miles away. One dealer is about an hour and a half drive from me, and his ads proclaim he finances 98% of all the people who need financing, regardless of credit history. He pulls people in from all over the state and even surrounding states. He has relationships with many banks, and other lending institutions which allow him to approve most loans. Most dealers also have access to the same lending partners.

I knew it was bull. That's why I was so pissed. I live in Northern Kenfucky, about 10 min south of Cincinnati, Ohio. The car is in a suburb of Fort Wayne, Indiana. It took me about 3 and a half hrs or so to get there. It's not like it's THAT far away...besides...what the fuck difference does it make, anyway? They're assholes, but I still want the damn car. It's just so bad ass...

Just an FYI, the portion of your credit that is derived from new credit applications is low (10 or 15%, I can't remember) and that is only recent (don't know how long it takes to disapear, but I believe the impact from applying to 10 loans would disapear within 6 months).

I know that aspect of it is not a big deal but, as far as I'm concerned, I don't need anything making my credit any worse...lol. I don't really worry about this that much, though.
