I test drove the new civic today. it was a 2006 civic sedan ex, 5spd AT.
its a terrible car. i like the looks. and its probably is reliable and fuel efficient. but i think honda screwed this one up.
first impression- the interior smells like vinyl, i know its a new car, but this smell will give you a headache after 5 minutes in the car. the engine is loud, even with the radio turned up, you can hear it churning. the doors sound cheap when closed. at first the interior layout is confusing and the seats a too firm.
driving impressions- although it boasts a 140hp engine, it is underpowered. im unsure on the torque rating. pressing on the gas yields no improvement as the trans take too long to downshift, i almost rear ended a car getting on the freeway. At freeway speeds, the engine buzzes, but that is normal for a smaller car. it was not windy outside, but unless you had two hands on the wheel it was hard to keep it from serving across the lanes. the suspension is firm, going over bumps was shaking. you can feel every small thing in the road. the digital speed display is hard to see, im sure that you will get used to looking up to see it instead of down. brakes are firm, but you can feel them getting softer as you drive more, this is texas and its in the 70's now so the heat maybe getting to them. one thing i was somewhat impressed with was its cornering ability. i was able to throw it around a u-turn quite confidently.
looks- the interior layout is strange at first, im sure its something you can get used to. outside, the new civic looks short and stubby. it looks like something your grandma would drive to bingo.
my overall impression was that honda tried to add some sort of sophistication to a car that was admired by those looking for simplicity. ive driven other cars in its class and the overall feel from driving is that it is cheap. for the price i would recommend going with a different car. i would compared the driving characteristics that of a kia rio, hyundai accent or even a scion xA. there are some features that i like about the car, but they were outweighed by the driving of the car.
i would like input on this car from you guys and maybe comparisons to older civic. ive never driven a civic before and to me its not lived up to what i thought it would be.
