how do i check tranny fluid in 95 taurus

no owners manual and not sure if car needs to be running

or if it needs to be warm and what gear it needs to be in

Tells you right on the dipstick I think..

you want a cool engine, in park. there should be a dipstick behind the engine close to the fire wall if i am not mistaken
