Are you sure you got life time fluid in your car?
Basically BMW started fill transmissions with a lifetime fluid all cars 3 series E46 1999 and up. I`ve never heard that E36 are filled with lifetime fluid.
Anyway if it is true, you can not put Dexron III to your tranny, these 2 fluids are not mixable and you will screw your tranny. Most likely you would need lifetime fluid made by Texaco-Texamatic ETL , AVILABLE ONLY FROM DEALERSHIP, but you got to connfirm it with the label on transmission pan or your dealership.
