Fuel Door Release

I have a stupid problem that needs to be solved relatively quickly. The fuel door release on my 2000 Passat stopped working today. I pulled into the gas station (with the fuel level way low) and I could not get the fuel door release to work. I tried the release with the car on, and the car off. The release switch is located on the drivers side door next to the trunk release switch. The truck release switch still works fine. I tried the fuel door release with the truck door lock on and off. There is no "click" that I would typically hear when using the fuel door release.

I have to admit that I sometimes accidently pull the fuel door release when I actually mean to pull the trunk door release, but I have not done anything extraordinary in closing the fuel door. Not that it matters, but I have a v6 Passat, stick, that was serviced about two weeks ago here in Gainesville. There was nothing extraordinary about the service, and I believe I have filled up the car since then with no problems opening the fuel door. Needless to say, I need to get gas into my vehicle asap. Any advice on how to get the thing opened bypassing the fuel door release may be helpful. I am not sure if I have enough gas to get to the dealership. I could try to pry the thing open, but, obviously, I would rather not. Any advice on how to fix this problem is apprecited.
