My balance belt broke and my sensor somehow got damaged while I was driving it the other day. It cranks but it doesn't fly.. Spoke to the machanic today and he says A valve is messed up..
Question is...
How big of a job is this? and How much will it cost me you think...? This is for a Mitubishi Eclipes GS Spyder 2.4 engine.

if the balance belt broke, it may have snapped the timing belt which would cause you to mess up some valves. You'll have to pull the head, it's a big job. i've never done it to the 2.4L nonturbo though.

I put in a new timing belt last friday (Jan 06) along with the water pump... Would it still snap even though it's a new belt..?

So you have taken the cover off and seen just the balance shaft belt broke? The timing belt still intatact and fine with no teeth missing or signs of it jumping? If the balance shaft broke and messed up the sensor chances are thats your problem why your car does not run. My balance shaft belt broke like 5 months ago and i never put another one on it and i never noticed a difference in engine performance or vibration. Now since this winter i pulled the motor and im removing them.

I've been home all day cause the guy said he should be done sometime today. When I was there yesterday, he showed me how the balance belt snapped off. So he told me he had to order a crankshaft sensor and the balance belt to fix it. Today i call to see how the car is doing and he says a valve was messed up somehow...
Last week, I went and got the timing belt from Discount Autoparts (verified that it was the right belt) and brought it to him. After he installed the timing belt he said that it had different teeth from the original one but he was able to put it on.
Fast foward to this week... As i've said in the thread called "belt sqeeling" I was driving to work and got it to forth gear and then suddenly the car cut off....
So what do you think...?

The way it sounds now is that the idiot knew he had the wrong timing belt but put it on anyways. If the teeth do not match up it cannot work or for long. He might have fucked your motor up!! Do you have the old timing belt still? If so take it to the autoparts store and have them look up another timing belt and see if the teeth are actually different or the same. If timing belt jumps or break its more than just A valve, its alot of valves. Sounds like he has no clue wtf he is doing. Did he do a compression check to determine this bent valve? Or just pulled the valve cover? I believe if you had 1 bent there is more than that bent.

he tried to put a belt that didn't match up correctly on? The car just shutting off does indeed sound like the car jumped timing. I'd have your mechanic do some explaning...
and thx for the comment ned

As for the old timing Belt, when he took it off last week it looked like it was in good shape. However, I bought the car used so i didn't want to take a chance with it. When he got the new belt he didn't say anything about it being the wrong belt. THen again, I made certain I got the right stuff from Discount Auto Parts that day cause i didn't want to go back there. Word of advice to anyone here, never take your car to a shop that is closing in 2 hours and expect a 2 1/2 hour job to be done in that time..

I think you need to find a real mechanic. And yes, if your timing belt breaks it will bend a lot of valves. And if it didn't break, I would be wondering if that half ass wanta be mechanic even timed it right. Was your car running before you took it to him. Is it worse now? If so, I would sue him in small claims court.
