Problem with 91 Legend ALB

My 91 Legend ALB pump cycles erratically.
About 6-8 months ago it ran about every 5-8 minutes ... with a loud rattling sound ... it's so loud it's embarrassing. Mechanics tell me that it is the ALB pump building up pressure. Then it started to cycle every 30 seconds. Then it went back to every 5-8 minutes.
Lately it has been running constantly for 3-5 minutes on start then it stops completely and the ALB light comes on. Garages have quoted NZ$350 to recondition the pump.
Today I replaced a brake light bulb (which I thought would have nothing to do with the ALB pump) and instead of the scenario above it has gone back to cycling every 30 seconds and just doesn't stop.
The car has done 240,00ks and is not worth spending a lot of money on, so I'm wondering if anyone could advise a simple inexpensive fix. At 68 years old I'm not exactly a "boy racer" and have never got into a situation where I have used the ALB, so it wouldn't bother me if I could disable it. However it that means the ALB light would come on all the time then it wouldn't pass the 6 monthly WOF (warrant of fitness) required here in New Zealand.
Any advice would be appreciated.
