Can you tell me if having too much automatic transmission fluid can cause problems shifting smoothly. I found out there was about 1 liter too much fluid in the automatic transmission and syphoned it out. The car always shifted smoothly in warm weather but as soon as the temperature dipped below freezing, if I didn't warm the car up to operating temperature in the morning the car wouldn't shift out of first gear until it warmed up to normal operating temperature. In addition. some days after deceleration around turns, the car wouldn't shift at all into gear, but then it would shift with a bang and a lurch. I'm wondering if this caused permanent damage. This is a 3.8 liter V8

yes, too much fluid can cause trouble shifting and transmission damage.

So I drained the excess ATF, a little more than 1 liter,(it holds 11.6 L),now it's between the marks, and the car still won't shift into a higher gear until it's warmed up. Any suggestions? Is this permanent damage?
