2000 chevy blazer - odd whine

2000 chevy blazer that I've owned for 8 weeks.
4WD didn't work when I got it - my mechanic found a hose that wasn't attached, attached it and the 4WD worked. Although - it CLUNKS loudly when it goes out of 4WD very hard and loud (pushbutton)
Weathers been good - have had little reason to use 4WD. Yesterday morning - drove the truck about 1 mile down the road and braked behind a slow moving vehicle. It made the "wind down" noise when a car brakes - only it never stopped. The noise just kept getting louder and louder. Another mile down the road, I stopped at a stop sign, put it in and out of gear, and when I went around the corner, it continued to make the noise. 2 more miles down the road, several stops/starts, slow downs along the way - all the while its loudly whining - and making the "wind down" noise when I brake and slow down - I get to a red light, brake hard and I feel/hear a little "pop". I put it into park, rev the engine - go around the corner - and its not doing it anymore.
Park it at work all day. Leave 8 hours later - and a mile down the road - starts the entire process again. This time, before I got another mile down the road, I pulled over, shifted it in and out of gear, played with the 4WD buttons, rev'd the engine- and when I pulled back on the road - no more loud whining.
This morning, identical to yesterday morning. Loud whining. I unrolled the passenger window and you can definitely hear it as loud in the cabin as you can outside - almost like something is hanging up when you brake, and making that whining noise, only starts when you brake, and the car starts to wind down. I took it to my mechanic this morning after I had been at work for an hour - but on the drive there (less than a mile) it didn't make the noise at all. He had it all day - and couldn't get it to duplicate the noise. He said bearings are a little loose - but not enough to cause the noise - and then -it wouldn't just randomly go away. He thought it was stuck in 4WD and shifted in and out until it CLUNKED hard and came out of 4WD.
strange is...It doesn't start making this wind down, fire engine whine until I've been driving it about 3 or 4 minutes - Its a LOUD whine - gets consistently louder - can hear it out the passenger window - sounds more on that side of the car than driver side - starts the first time you brake....you wind down as you brake - only the wind down noise gets louder and louder -
Almost like something is dragging. I don't know. Its not smoking, it handles fine, it doesn't smell wierd otherwise..
any ideas - I just bought this thing and haven't had it long enough to have a major repair. He thought maybe differential but didn't want to get into it without being able to hear the whine.
any suggestions are helpful

Check this post for info regarding the clunk on disengagement.

Probably has to do with mismatched tire sizes, etc on your vehicle. Check that out first.

I had a similar problem. The clunk noise in and out of 4 wheel drive is likely separate from the whine unless there is damage to the front diff. For the clunk, check to make sure every tire is the same tread depth. One tire with more meat on it will throw the 4WD off. Some mechanics will dispute it. I lived it and you will find a thread on this forum where someone else ate crow for the same reason. Four new tires will elimate a 4WD engagement/disenagement clunk most times.
Now on to your whine. Likely your cable that was disconnected was a vacuum line. It was likely disconnected or capped or left off to leave your front diff engaged all the time so you didn't notice the noise which is your diff partially engaging. Have your mechanic replace your vacuum switch that is mounted on top of the transfer case. The part will run you about $50 bucks or so. It is likely sticking causing the front diff to partially engage. By pushing the 4HI button and the 2HI you are unsticking the switch temporairly The whine will get louder as you drive, develop to a hum. Eventually it will get so bad, you will get this damage to your diff. This was my truck. $2200 Canadian among other parts.
