ok my first question is i just put headers on my camaro. i started it for the first time and i took it round the block brought it back and it was smokin like a mother and smelt like hot dogs lol. is that the substances on the header burning off? i also used wd40 dont kno if that would be it.
my second question is i took of my stock exhaust and used an impact 2 get the muffler off. now my gas gauge wont work. do i gota tap the tank 2 get the needle 2 unfreeze? or tap the mechanizm at the top of tank?
my third question is i have a wierd "clunking" noise. i can only hear it when the hood is open. its not loud but its noticeable. is it because i have no exhaust and its just floatn out or whats the deal?
I appreciate ur guys/womens help alot. thanks bill :banghead:

Did you pop the hood to see where the smoke was comeing from when it was happening? thats the best way to find its source...Could be the wd40, or a couple drops of oid on the exhaust manifold burning off, or if you sprayed and penetrent or engine cleaner in your engine compartment, even if you wash it off(at least in the case of engine cleaner) there is a small amount of that stuff left and it smells like s**t when its burning off...smoke everywhere:smokin:
Are you shure its only the gas gauge thats not working? Are the temp, oil-pressure, and tach gauges working OK? If not then you probably pushed the oxygen sensor wire out of place and its inselation melted and is shorting out the gauges fuse, but if they are working fine and you are shure there is enough gas in the tank to register on the gauge, then I would probably shake the tangs a little bit and see if that does it...I say shake because it is held up by straps and should be able to move a little, not to mention you dont want to damage your tank. If that doesnt do it, then just drive the car with the gas gauge not working for a couple days, sometimes these things fix themselves and it is a little more of a hassel to get to the mechanizm on top of the tank, but if after a couple days (and a few pot-holes and speedbumps) the problem doesnt fix itself, then you will need to mess with that thing.

Could be noisy rockers, valves, or a worn timing chain, but its probably your exhaust (more lite a tick tick tick sound than a clunk) singe you were messing with it.
Did you replace your muffeler or just remove it?
Well anyhow, if you can only hear it when the hood is open, then it is probably a very tiny exhaust leak. Id say check the aspestos "donuts". They are space fillers between the exhaust manifold and the exhaust pipes that lead to the CAT. There are two, one for each exhaust manifold. They are easy to find, the exhaust manifold and the pipe I mentioned before are held together by two thick bolts on opposite sides of the 'donut'.
You probably just changed the stress being put on those connecting areas momentairily, but the donuts are made to squish when the pipes move closer together, but once its been squished, it doesnt go back.
When the car is cool, start it up, and see if you cant tell from which side of the engine it is comeing from, once you know, turn off the car, before it gets hot, put some penatrent on the bolts (I mentioned before) on the side of the engine you think the leak is comeing from. Let it sit for a few minutes and try to tighten those bolts(by hand, and just a little to get them snug again). To do this, you will need a deep socket, if your camaro was made during the years when they were trying to switch to metric parts, then I think it will be a deep 15mm, 17mm, or 18mm... if your car isnt metric, then you will need to guess and check, or ask someone else.
Hope my :2cents: are helpful.:lol2:

malletslinger is on track i think with the noise, my headers until they expand with heat sound like a rod knock almost,s scared the bejesus out of me first time I heard it.
On the guage, i think you just hit the wiring or something too.

yeah they were pretty helpful but i dont have any exhaust on my car yet its just open headers. if problem dont subside ill get it looked at thanks for your post. i dun no bout gas gauge im thinkn filling it up and might release the needle inside the mechanism
