Okay this is a good one, I'm doing deep research into my restoration project on a 1987 Firebird Formula 305 that turning out to be a rare car...
Heres some oddities in this car. (You may have to google a Pontaic VIN Decoder for the other vin code options)
This car is a A4 Transmisson matted to a LG4 V8 4bbl Rochester Quadrajet *cough*soon to be replaced with an edlebrock*cough*.
Which is standard for the rare"er" VIN code H. (There is also VIN code F for the TPI Formula 305).
Anyhoo... heres the deal thsi firebird is a driving controdiction of rarity. 1987 was the first year they brought back the firebird formula, and 1987 was the one of the few years in the 80's that an f-body featured a carb'ed engine. and 1987 was the last. The Firebird Formula 305 VIN "H" was the Last F-body to use a carb'ed engine.
Heres the first odd thing, the VIN sports code S not W... S is standard base model, W is Trans-Am/Formula (Digit 5). Now, there is no way this is a base model. Its formula. Its got the wrap around spoiler, the extra frame rail by the radiator, markings, cowl induction hood, and logoing. Plus the transmisson id numbers, block casting, engine bay, rear diff, and special yellow paint code, etc all bear formula codes. (cue the wtf's).... not to mention the ultra wtf... the VIN lists the H engine code, for the 305 4bbl...
Item 2, not really an oddity but a good one none the less... this car was made in Norwood, OH. In fact it was made one month before the plant was shut down (google norwood, ohio+general motors for an interesting read). Norwood was the primary F-Body plant, mostly camaro... most Firebirds were made at Van Nuys. So check one on the rarity scale for that...
Now to the last oddity... this car has to be a "COPO" of some sort... for example... it has the permium sound package from Boston Acoustics, which i have only seen in GTA's...not Formula's. It has the Preformance Suspenstion package (and logoing on the dash) both of which are not standard to any firebird line except GTA...
Any one... got any ideas here? any one with info? This is confusing the hell out of me... I know this car is in the rare area now, being a Norwood, Formula 305, Yellow, with T-Top and Z suspenstion package. And maybe a factory mismarked VIN... there are only 13,164 Formulas made in 1987. (Norwoods max assembly line production was around 150 cars a month for Firebirds... which limits this to within 1500 produced cars. Norwood closed Aug 26. 1987)

(ohh...anyone know the production numbers for 1987 formula line, i only found overall... i'm wondering if anyone has a break down of 305 and 350 production numbers...)

there's a slight chance the VIN got switched off another car due to damage or something so extensive on the other car, but they for whatever reason wanted to keep the original VIN. Someone could have switched out all the formula parts too, odd as well but not impossible. More than likely though, since it was made in a factory outside of the normal one, had options not typical to the car, etc., the VIN may have just been mispunched or the options package installed wasn't the one that was supposed to be on the car for whatever reason.
