Well i bought a 99 z71 with a bad trans in it. 3rd gear clutches where shot. I went to a local trans shop and he had a trans that came out of a wrecked 99 z71. He said it had about 4k miles on it. Well he gave me a ggod price ($650 w/ convertor) and he installed it for me for $250. So all said and done it was about $950. Well he put the trans in on october 25. And yesterday im going to work and the trand went out. It was doing the same thing. No third gear and 1st and 2nd where slipping!! I was soooo pissed....
so i brought it in and hes taking a look at it.
well i guess my question is, is this common? Has anyone had an issue like this?
Thanks

The 4l60e SUCKS!!!!! You've definately got some issues somewhere though, because no way that tranny should have went out that soon. I would see if the installer can reimburse you, because it going out that quick after the install is not your problem....its his. Did he give you any kind of warranty on labor?
FWIW.....you can build a 4l60e with the best parts in the world, but it still isn't going to hold up to any kind of abuse(not saying you abuse them.....but I do). My level 5 build lasted roughly a year, then I started having problems.
If you don't have an aftermarket tranny cooler, I would definately invest in one of those. The stock coolers that come on some of the trucks just doesn't do the job. I would also invest in a tranny temp gauge of some sort. It's saved me from running the tranny too hot on more than one occation.

What aftermarket tranny cooler would you suggest I replace my factory one with, Slow?

I've been really happy with my permacool. With my 3000 stall and stop and go traffic, it keeps the temps down considerably lower than the stock cooler. On a stock converter/tranny setup, it will do wonders. I've also had some great experiences with the B&M in the past. Both are great products!!!

Very common on a 650$ trans rebuild job.
Cornners had to be cut to rebuild it that cheap.
You should have a OEM factory rebuilt trans.
3 year or 50K parts and labor warranty.

They put the 4L60E in all 1/2ton and 3/4ton's with a 350 or smaller gas motor. Three ways that I have found to keep them from having problems is to: 1. if pulling or hauling a lot service every 12,000 miles if not service every 24,000 miles, 2. flush every other or every third time, 3. use Lube-Gard Automatic Transmission Protectant (in the red bottle.) For more info on the Lube-Gard http://www.lubegard.com/automotive/trans_atf.html

I guess they don't make them like the old 400 THM trans.

The 4L60e is more like the TH350, and the 4L80e is more like the TH400
