Adding a Spray Coating to Dash Pad - 93 Lumina

Hi.
I recently purchased a 1993 Lumina, and want to replace the main dash pad because of discoloration and warping. Finding one shouldn't be a problem, but once I find one in good condition, I want to make sure that the same damage does not occur with the new dash pad.
Normally if this piece was hard plastic I would most likely go through the normal procedure of painting, but it's actually made of a wierd spongy material, and I'm thinking that some sort of spray-on hard coating would prevent any damage in the future.
Any recommendations on what I should use and where I might find it?
Keep in mind this is a low-budget project.
Thanks.

It's soft for a reason, in order to cushion in case your head hit's it in a car accident. I wouldn't reccomend stiffening it up. see if you can glues the original one back down.
