The radio/CD LED readout on the face place of my '99 GTP has gone blank. However, everything shows up ok in the HUD. Does anyone know how serious and what I'm up against?

There is a bulb that backlights the display, which has burned out. Take a flashlight and shine it at the display, if you can then read it, that's the problem. There is another problem involving the diode that powers the LED that can cause the display to go out as well, so if you can't see it with the flashlight trick, the diode is the problem.

Once again you've been a big help. Since I can read the display with a flashlight, I understand that the diode is probably ok and the light bulb has burned out. Do I need to completely remove the radio from the dash to access this bulb, or is there an easier method of locating and replacing it? Would appreciate your advice.

Radio must be removed and the repair procedure is below:
http://users.adelphia.net/~bpaskevich/index_files/Radio_Lamp_repair.htm
The GM part number for the lamp is 16208443. List price around $8.00. Suitable replacements are mentioned in the R&R article.

Certain things you can blame on cheap parts, but in this particular instance, it's not GM's fault. Over time, all incandescent bulbs burn out, it's physics.
