Is Elantra a good car to buy?

My daughter is looking to buy a 2001 Hyundai Elantra. It has 73000 miles on it and the seller says it was just tuned up in the spring and has a new battery. The price seems to be too good to be true, much less than book value. Any common problems I should be looking for? If the timing belt hasn't been changed, does that need changed immediately? Any concerns with the brakes or transmission? From other posts, it looks like the warranty would be gone, since she wouldn't be the original purchaser?

I have a '99 with about 73000 miles on it. Never had any problems. To answer your questions, yes the timing belt needs to be done ASAP if it hasn't yet. If it breaks, there goes the engine. The warranty would be up as second owners get 5 yrs or 60k miles. Other maintenance items that would need to be done if they haven't are fuel filter, air filter, spark plugs, and coolant drain/refill.

As for brakes, you can go to a place like Meineke or Midas and they will check them for free. (at least most of them will)

Edit: it would also be wise to have the tranny flushed if it has an auto. tranny (if it hasn't been done).
