I am looking for an exhaust system. I am not sure what kind to get though. I want it to have a beefy sound to it. No import ricer sound at all. Also I just had a brand new catalytic converter put on because my other one went bad.It is an after market non GM one. It has alot more power then with the old cat. Should I get Cat-Back or just the mufflers for sound? I would also like as much performance out of it as possible. I am not sure if just getting mufflers would give me any more power though, so Should i get cat-back? thanks

Just get the mufflers. The complete CAT Back exhaust is a waste of money. The problem I saw was they are all just about 2 1/4 OD on the plumbing for the canned systems so why waste the money. I had a complete custom system put in consisting of 2.5" from the downpipe all the way to the input of the mufflers. Also, I deleted the resonator.

I agree, i would get a magnaflow hi-flow cat and a borla exaust or magnaflow. I agree with what Bob said, i would get rid of that resonator. It holds back preformance, and you can get a little gas mil. and you will get a better tone in the muffler.

OK Well I will just get the mufflers then. Will I get any performance out of them or will I just get the sound? I just want my car to have a nice rumble to it. As close as it can sound to a V8. Does anyone know of any sound clips of grand prixs to help me make me desicion? thanks.

The benefits will be nice sound more than performance. There may be some increase in power but nothing to jump up and down about. It sounds like you did one of the best mods if you replcaed the stock CAT with a Hi-Flow. I have a Magnaflow Hi-Flow with 2.5 inlet/outlet. Also u-bend delete should be performed if not already done.

I dont have a high flow cat. My stock one went bad, so I just had the shop put on a non GM cat. Is it worth it to get a high Flow cat? I am pretty sure that I am going to go with the 40 series flowmasters, without a resonator and u bend. What would I need to get Besides the mufflers inorder to have the mufflers installed and take out the resonator and U bend? ALso how do i know what size inlet and outlet I would need on the mufflers? I would probably want to keep the exhaust tips that are on the car right now. thanks.

The stock exhaust pipe OD is 2.25".
From the output of the CAT convertor due to resonator and u-bend delete you'll need a custom straight pipe and Y leading into the mufflers. The straight pipe will need a standard 18mm X 1.5mm 02 sensor bung installed for the rear 02 sensor.
Find a reasonable mom & pop muffler shop to do the cutting, welding and pipe fabrication. Good luck!

So I should just get 2 mufflers with 2.25" inlet and 2.25" outlet, take it to the shop and then they can just do it from there? Will the shop have all the stuff to make a y pipe and do the sensor bung?
Hey thanks alot for answering all my questions. I just want to be sure that I am doing everything right.

I just got my exhaust done like 3 weeks ago... Got a shop to do my 2.5" catback and I went with magnaflow mufflers...
I like the sound, its not ricey but I wouldn't call it beefy...
how does potato sound, that is kind of in between rice and meat...
I don't really know how much of a difference it makes because I did all my mods within a 3 day span...
the Pulley and PCM was done by a shop here(they had a pulley puller, so I got them to do it, they put the pulley on and replaced my pcm with the intense for only $70, that beats buying a puller)... Went to the muffler shop the next day, got my car back that evening... The next day I put on the CAI and the thermostat...
i'm still waiting on my core charge from my pcm to arrive from intense...

Hey thanks alot for answering all my questions. I just want to be sure that I am doing everything right.
The shop I went to had all the pipe stock and equipment such as mandrel bending machine to do the work. The 02 sensor bung is universal at 18mm X 1.5mm pitch and the shop should have it in stock.
The best thing to do is check with them and show them what you want done. As usual go to more than one if possible and get estimates to make sure you get a good deal and quality work.

I I cut out the u-bend and catalytic converter and put a 6" srtaight pipe running back to were it splits off to both mufflers. It's got a deep rumble, I like it alot, I just need to get new mufflers too to finish it.

I've been looking at the flowmaster 80 series for my 98 GTP, would that be a good type also, i want it to sound deep but not like a ricer, and i herd sound clips from the flowmaster 80 series and i liked how they sounded on a V6.

A 6'' Dame, there is room for that size in there? Wow!

What is the purpose of taking out that catalytic convertor? what are the advantages and disadvantages? Wont it have trouble passing emissions? Also. if I wanted to get a 2.5" inch muffler inlet and outlet what would I have to change on the stock exhaust to get it from 2.25" to 2.50"? I cant find the mufflers I want with the 2.25". I can only find the 2.50".

Sorry about that last post. I found the mufflers that I wanted. I am an idiot. I would still like to know about the catalytic converter though. thanks

The engines now a days run so clean, you do not even need to have a cat to pass the e-check. Now, the 1996 and newer cars use the obd2 cpu anyways, if you do not have a check engine light on, your fine. a hi-flow cat will work better, and still collect some hydro(sp) carbons. The muffler shop can expand one side of the pip to make it fit the 2.50 inlit to the cat.

Yeah, the 6" pipe made a huge difference in performance, the only thing I had to do because of the weight and size was weld a bracket so it stays up closer to the car and doesn't bounce around, but it fit fine with plenty of room.

6'' pipe? Semi trucks use a 6''pipe. Are you sure its a 6'' pipe?

Yeah it is a 6 inch straight pipe running all the way back to the split. I'm very sure.

I appologize..... it is a 3" straight pipe. The pipe was 6' long when we got it, so for some reason that number was stuck in my head.
I did just get the INTENSE pcm, new tires, flow master mufflers, silverstar headlights and a new K&N filter for my birthday from my brother tho :-)

That sounds better. You had us wondering for awhile. So you deleted the resonator too. Also, are you running an 02 simulator since you removed the CAT. Does your state require emissions testing?

Ohio does have to have emissions testing I think, but I'm not going to worry about that until I get pulled over or something. And yes I do have an O2 sim, but I don't need it now because the INTENSE pcm I just got can make it so it's like an O2 sim.

Sounds good. I have a DHP and Intense PCM. The Intense is for the dragstrip and my new mods. Also, I took the custom option of rear 02 sensor disable so it doesn't set any DTC error code like P0420, etc.
Chances are you won't ever get pulled over for an emissions test but a lot us of still have to pass annual emissions as required by the respective state so I still run with a CAT.

I would worry when you go to your e-check. If you live in wayne co. you dont have to have an e-check.
