98 cavalier transmision problems

Car would not go in any gear at first. Kept jiggling gear shift and finaly went in gear. But car will not move. It is like you hold the brake and give it gas. What I mean it pulls down the motor like it wants to go. Its like the mechanism that keeps the car from moving when it is in park is not releasing when you put it in any gear even neutral. Bought book it told me how to change tr switch but did not tell what it does or that was the problem. also when you are shifting between r-n-d transmision makes a grinding noise. PLEASE HELP!!!

whenever you here a grinding noise from a transmission and it doesn't go you want to withdraw all the money from savings and dip into your kids college fund and give it all to whomever you tell to fix it.
it sounds like a band broke or a planetary gear took a crap, it will probably be cheapest to find a reman or salvaged tranny.
