KYB GR2 struts + 98 Corolla = bad combo

Replaced the factory struts all around with KYB GR2s (struts, mounts and boots) on my 98 Corolla with 180K miles. Install went fine - perfect fit from KYB. However the ride is VERY stiff -- every bump, large and small, causes jolts which are uncomfortable. Seems as if these are too stiff for the Corolla. Damping rates do not seem to be well matched to the car. On the other hand, the handling has greatly improved -- very little body lean and the tires feel pasted to the road. THIS is how a Corolla should handle!

Stock springs (fine condition) and tire pressures are correct.

Any thoughts? The new ride is just too uncomfortable.

The original struts were well past their prime after 180,000 miles. The car would bottom out on deep potholes.

I would imagine that the OEM Toyota struts would be much softer and better to restore the original Corolla ride.

The handling with the performance shocks is superb and the jolting ride is an unfortunate trade-off.

Well you increased the damping force. Therefore the shock compresses less, which sends more energy into the chassis. Do you still have the OEM wheels on it? I agree that the ride with stiff shocks and or springs is quite harsh, but thats what you get.

What other aftermarket struts would be softer, yet still maintain handling? Some have recommended Monroe Sensatracs or Monro-matic Plus.

Yeah I'm pretty sure Monroe's are fairly soft for the most part. If you want a soft ride but still good handling then I'd recommend upgrading the front and rear swaybars on your car. That will help it stay flatter on the curves and won't affect ride quality.
