Transfer Case...

Hey,

'88 XJ Cherokee Laredo 4.0L Auto. 138k mi, Reman 4.0 and AW4 Asian Tranny put in at 135k mi.

Aside from changing an occasional sensor all else running well.

All else stock.

Do you think I should change the TRANSFER CASE as well or these things don't go bad? She shifts fine in all modes of 4WD and 2WD.

Thx, Phil:smile:

It's pretty easy to say if you have the extra money to put in it after everything else you have done and want to be on the safe side then i'd go ahead and change it out. If money's a little tight then i'd wait on it since you say it shifts fine through all gears. It's ultimately up to you but if I had the extra money I'd go ahead and do it so as to avoid problems down the road when I didn't have the money for it.

Hey Dave92Cherokee,

Yup, makes sense. That's why I did the engine and tranny (engine was blown and tranny was slipping (fluid was burnt too).

Anyone, do you see the Transfer Cases going bad in my year XJ '88 or similar?

Thx, Phil:smile:

I haven't heard of anyone having much trouble with transfer cases on Cherokees. If you are going to put in a new or re-build and will feel better changing it out, it may be worth the money. If you are going to put in a used one, you don't know if it's any better than the one you have. I go by "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" most of the time but you seem to be trying to bring your Cherokee up to A1 condition. 138,000 really isn't much miles but if the tranny was tore up and the motor was blown, someone must have beat it pretty bad.

With all the work you are doing, you are going to have the best '88 around.

Hey Jeepme,

Thanks and coming from a fellow XJ Wheeler that means a LOT to me :grinyes:

Thx, Phil
