P71 cut out won't re-start

Hi everyone! i'm new here and wonder if any one can help? My p71 had trouble starting yesterday morning the crank took a little longer than normal but she did start I wasn't too worried it was a very cold morning. The car had a hour run down the motorway the engine was shut off for 15 minutes. When the key was turned to start the car it took a little longer this time about 10 mins to get it started. When it did start it was missing and spluttering this then cleared and the car was driven an hour back home on the motorway, as soon as the car pulled off onto a local road the car stalled and would not go. It had to be recovered after an hour of the mechanic testing various relays and fuel things. I am told there is power to the fuel pump, but no petrol getting to the fuel filter
I am in the UK and the local Ford dealers have no idea what is really wrong. can any one help with any suggestions.

Also whats the easiest way to get the petrol pump off so that I can take it get that checked out? It is in the tank. Has the tank got to come off or will it come out without taking the car to bits.

If both of the relays checked out okay, and you have power at the fuel pump, the pump might be bad. There is also a fuel pump shut off (impact) switch in the trunk on the LH, you might want to try and reset it.

Hi, the inertia switch has been reset and still no joy! Does any one have any ideas where I could buy a fuel pump online that would ship to the UK? Or does any one have a part number? so that I could try our local ford dealer!

And how do you get the pump out!!! I have been told to push the clips with a screwdriver until they unclip is this right? These clips aren't normally used here!

The very first thing to check is fuel. Yes, I know, but still fuel gauges lie. Have you driven over 350km since the last fill?

Now that you know you have fuel, can you hear the pump running briefly when you turn the ignition to the "Run" position? If not, you could have a bad pump, connection at the pump, relay or wiring.

If the pump does run briefly, then you have eliminated that system as a cause. Yey. I would then focus on spark. You can remove one of the coils (they are directly on top of the sparkplug) using a 7mm wrench (or was that 6mm?), then pull it outward and up. Using a spare plug, have someone crank the enigne over and look for spark. No spark most likely means that the crank sensor is bad. It is located on the right side of the engine (as "seen" from the interior) just behind the crankshaft pulley at about 8 o'clock (next to the A/C compressor). You can use many "scan tools" to see if you get an RPM signal before replacing any parts, if you have access to one.

Aside from those two things, check all your fuses and main wire connections to the battery and power distribution box. If a connection is loose, it can cause similar symptoms.

My bet is the pump or crank sensor however.

I'm pretty sure its sounding like either a Crankshaft sensor or the Fuel Module "fuelpump".
To change the fuelpump in this vehicle you need to remove the gas tank and it should be held in with a C clip, It turns to release it. Typically I use a brass punch and a mallet to remove those.

You are correct, you DO NOT have to remove the tank to replace the pump. You do, however, need to let the axle hang free and support the vehicle on the frame to do so.
