Double clutching goes like this. You are driving, and it is time to shift. You press the clutch in, take it out of gear, let the clutch out, press the clutch back in, then shift it back into gear, let the clutch out, then off you go. All this has to be done before your RPMS drop low, and you look silly :) It is somewhat hard to get the hang of, but can look cool, and have some benefits. The guy in the new RSX commercial, where he is zipping through the country side, double clutches. The benefits of it are minor, in my opinion. It is supposed to get the syncros to spin in sync with the gears, so there is less strain on them. (i think thats why it is done) Once in awhile I try to do it, and I know some people who do it like it is normal. Hope that helps :)

Double clutching was necessary before manual transmissions had the synchronization parts they have today.

Heel-Toe refers to revving the engine when downshifting and braking. It's used mostly in racing. It goes like this:

You have to slow down for a turn or your car will slide. You will slow down enough that you will also need to downshift.

Right foot - brake pedal, left foot clutch.

Right hand selects new gear, but the speed at which you want to use this gear corresponds to higher RPM, and while the clutch is out, RPMs are falling anyway.

So, Turn right foot sideways, heel on the brake, and push the gas pedal with the right toe, until RPMs are back up to where they need to be. Let out the clutch, get off the brake, and the clutch plate doesn't slip as it re-engages, so you can start accelerating immedeately.

I can never do this as a true heel-toe. I have to use the side of my foot to hit the gas. I wear size 11 (American) shoes and I hear other people with the same size shoe (and bigger) have no problem. But there arer lots of people that do it side-to-side, too.

Oh, well that sounds like fun, my friend is trying to learn how to do that right now. Iwas told that double Clutching was when you shift by just letting off the Gas and matching your RPM's with the shift. I don't know though.

not clutching...haha. kbslacker got it right. my brother was showing me in his beemer how he double clutches it sometimes for downshifting. he says he can get much smoother downshifts, but he wasn't doing that great. it looks kinda difficult.

So, for clarification's sake, it's just pumping the clutch pedal twice before the shifter get to where it's going?

that's basically it. pump the clutch and put the shifter in neutral. then pump the clutch again and put it in gear.

I've been trying without much (any) success to shift my car without clutching. Say, going from 2nd to 3rd...I get the shifter out of second without the clutch no problem. Push the shifter towards third and hold it just outside of where it snicks in, rev the engine a little...the shifter starts to neatly fall into place, but then grinds and gets shoved back out. I just can't do it :(

I think when they say granny shifting, it is generally people that double clutch. Granny shifting to them is just normal shifting. Does anyone here power shift? When I say power shift I mean without a clutch and foot on the accelerator (since I know there are different defenitions of power shifting.)

i know a guy who thought he was the coolest guy ever who power shifted. he has a civic SI(he even asked my brother if he wanted to race...in his M3...) so he thinks his car is AWESOME! back to powershifting, he's trashed his tranny twice powershifting. he's not that smart i guess....

i'm a bimmer boy cuz BMWs are awesome, fast, good-looking, handle like none other, etc... and i dont like rice rockets, at all. i still can't believe that guy asked my brother if he wanted to race. i bet those cars(Z3 and WRX wagon) are real fun to drive!!

I have a friend with a daily driven, 11 year old beater rice rocket, that would smoke an M3 hands down. :xelicon:

I know for a fact that many rice rockets are blazingly fast, I just think they look stupid, and most of all I hate the typical ricer's attitude.

I power shift sometimes in the old 951. Have to match the rpms just right between the shift or it does not sound pretty. I only done it a few times in my car I just don't trust it that much. If i drive my friends honda I do it all the time cause if i press the clutch in I can't feel it anyways because its so soft compared to mine.
