well if a 4.0 will be that big of a pain. how difficult really is the 5.0 swap and welding cutting stuff like that or will it pretty much fit aside from the oil pan and headers and all that?....any idea of the cost?
also is there a huge difference in noticable power?

Chevy small blockes are droped into s10's all the time. i dont see why you couldnt drop a ford smalblock with a little work into a ranger :)

Off the top of my head the things I can think of that you will need to get in a 3.0 to 5.0 swap are a wiring harness, a new radiator, an oil filter relocater kit, a tranny to handle the torque, it also depends on if your gonna go for a fuel injection set up or a carb set up. if you go with the carb set up you will have to get a fuel regulator on your fuel lines because i think the fuel pump on the 3.0's pump at around 30 to 40 PSI. You will also need to drill new holes for your mounting brackets and you will need to take a sledge to that fire wall because a V-8 tranny wont fit. The reason its so easy to drop a 350 in a s-10 is because the 4.3's are the same engine as the 350's but with 2 cylinders chopped off. The mounting and everything is all the same. heres some more info. http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/V8Conversions.html

Im not sure about the hours, but the pricing can differ depending on what you get. it will obviously cost more if you do engine work before your drop it in your ranger. I'd say the cheapest you could probably do it for is around a grand or so.

Believe it! :)

The price for a good EFI swap is in the thousands. Typically 2,000-3,000.

Think about it..
Engine
Transmission
ECC-IV
Drive Shaft
Custom Motor Mounts
Custom Headers
New Exhaust
Special Hard to Find Oil Pan
Oil Filter Relocation Kit
Plugs
Wires
Oil Filter
Oil
Water
o2 sensors
Painless Wiring Harness
Water Pump
Hoses
Radiator
Distributor Cap
Rotor
The list goes on..
