Ok, just got done driving on about 30 miles of dirt road..now..I was wondering, do you have to clean the air filter after a certain period of time, or just replace it?

And if so, how often?

Well you replace a paper filter (which is the standared one fitted by the factory, or at service).
And you clean a drop in or pod type aftermarket Foam filter.

There are service intervels for them, but it depends so much on your driving conditions thats I think its best to check it every couple of months, or thousand kms/miles and replace or clean as nessacry.

get a K&N filter, they are reusable and last for about 1,000,000 miles according to manufacturer, plus you can clean them and put it right back in.

What do you use to clean your k&n? I bought k&n's filtercharger kit, it comes with a cleaner and oil. Anyone used this?

I have used the filtercharger kit from K&N. It works well. Seems like the cleaner is like a watered down windex type cleaner. Well you spray that stuff and all this dirt comes from the filter. You rinse it, dry it, and spray the red oil that comes with the kit. I let that sit out for a bit then installed it. It works good and the nice high pitch churp is back with avengance.

yeah 10 dollar kit used to clean them, but your first cleaning prolly wont be for awhile.

On average (I know there are environmental variables that will make more\less) how often do you clean your filter?

Once a year around or when I feel it not working as well.
