I just got my 81, but from an article I read, here is what it indicates....
The SS package (for this gen) was only an appearance package. Probably a 5.0 L engine with two tone paint job and decals on the sides... SS emblem on tailgate and dash... no performance upgrades that I am aware of. I did not bookmark the article so I'm sorry I can't send you the link.
When I was shopping, I also looked at an 83 SS and did not see anything other than appearance upgrades.

MY SS had a 5.7L 4bbl option, but a Black Knight appearance package. She was a 78.

The major differences between the regular and ss versions of the el camino is a longer front end on the ss, a bigger small block(350 c.i.), trim is same, front end usually from a Monte Carlo rather than Malibu, interior about the same, dash with includes all gauges.
