Who wants to help with a Twin Turbo project?

Well, I had thought about this before I bought my Talon and I still am considering it. Before I wanted to put a twin turbo setup on my 3.1L V6 Firebird. I'm sure you guys are gonna tell me to not waste my time or money on it and just put it into my Talon. The thing is though, I know what I'm doing with the Talon and I am curious as to what kind of power I can get out of my Firebird with a twin turbo setup... I wasn't gonna go and do anything really fancy, just like 2 16g's or something like that. The only problem I'm running into now is the lack of information on turbocharging a n/a car.

I know I will need:

2 turbos (probably 16g's)
an intercooler
all my piping and couplings
MAF Translator and sensor?
customized exhaust manifolds
2 wastegates
3" exhaust
2 v bands?
2 air filters
boost controller
boost guage
egt guage

Is this all I would need or am I forgetting something? I have a friend that can do the cutting and welding of flanges for the exhaust manifolds for me. Now what I'm wondering is, do I need some different computer that can read boost? Or will I be able to do a setup without swapping it. Keep in mind that this is a 3.1L V6... If I have to swap it out, could I use the same computer that the Buick GN's use even though its a 3.8L... I'm sure you guys won't know it all since we're the DSM guys. But I thought that you would be able to help me with the knowledge that I still need to do this project... I have sooo much room under the hood of the Firebird it isn't even funny. Theres enough room for me to sit in front of the motor while its in there and work on it. lol But yeah, I really wanna know what else it would take to build this and if its even possible.

Do you think the internals would hold up to about 5-10 psi? I figure that should be plenty to get it up to about 275hp at least. Stock, it has 140hp... Yes, I know... Its very very sad... lol But I just want your opinions and thoughts and any information that might help me with this. I've done searches and looked all over the internet and nobody else has twin turbocharged a 3.1L motor. If they have, I haven't seen it or found it yet. lol

There's an SS around my area that is doing a TT job. He has two crazy ass huge turbos(like t88 or some crazy something  ) and he is doing two intercoolers and some other stuff.

Anyways...Are you sure the 16g's will flow enough? You will also need a new fuel pump, probably fuel lines, bigger injectors, gaskets, lines, some sort of aftermarket fuel management.

That would be pretty cool though if you TT'd that car :naughty:.

I figure that if people run low 13's on a 16g for 4 cylinders, then 2 16g's should be plenty for 6 cylinders. lol But yeah, I figured I would have to do some type of fuel setup too. I'm just kinda lost on the whole computer setup. Do you think that the MAF Translators they make for LT1's and LS1's could be modified for a 6 cylinder and then keep my stock computer? I'm just a little confused on that whole setup and can't seem to find any info on it. Nobody wants to take the time to do something like this to one of these cars, but I think it would be pretty sweet. lol

If you can afford it man, I say go with more than the 2 16g's...but if you just want to experiment, stick with the two 16gs...Are you still going to twin turbo your talon? Or is it a one or the other type thing? ie. Talon or Bird. Good luck with it though man...When your working on it, take some pics and post them up, I'd love to see what you get done. Take care man, Peace

How about an AFPR that is boost referenced. Probably a fuel pump too.

just curious... where would you put the other turbo??? hopefully you would have taken all the usless stuff out.. like A/C stuff and emmisons those wires im sure would piss me off.....lol for the exhaust manifold you could have a 2 runners ( ithink that what they called) per turbo lol if you have cash to blow like that... i don't know

TT a 4 cylinder? :screwy:

I thought about doing it... TT'ing a 4 cylinder. It would be pointless as fuck, but it would be unique. After I thought about it I realized that it would take way more work and money for the same results as a single turbo and I dont have overly deep pockets. I think it would be sweet to do something crazy for a project car after you are done with the talon. When Mike is done with his Talon we are going to drop a V8 in a early 90's cavalier, covert it to RWD (duh), and hook it up. We're thinking we might go crazy and do a TT setup, maybe nitrous, gutted, and a roll cage. We see like 13 newbies a day come into the cavalier forum wanting to do an engine swap on their old POS. So we thought what the hell? We have half an idea what to do, we know people who do lots of custom fabricating that could help, and its not our DD like theirs. I'd go for it dude, but I'd finish your DSM first.

I'd almost say go with a larger single turbo. It would be cheaper and a lot easier (half the work). That would seem to make more sense considering people convert tt supra, boogt's and 300zx's to single turbo and those are all 3.0L. Maybe thats for running higher boost though. I've got an awesome book about turbos and turboing n/a cars so if you have any q's i could look it up for you.

Actually, I've seen people do that before to DSM's. They run a ridiculously huge turbo and then a smaller one to help spool up the huge one quicker. I think they called it a sequential turbo setup...

But yeah, I'm definetly gonna finish up the Talon first. But I figured I might as well start gathering info about doing it to the Firebird too. And yes, I would just get rid of everything I didn't need and turn it into a race car. lol

I went and looked at the Banks Twin Turbo setup for v-8s that they sell and was looking at how they do it. It's really not that different from our cars except for that they run 2 of everything. My one friend said I'm an idiot for even considering it, but now it makes me wanna do it even more. I bet he won't be so negative when its the fastest v6 around. lol

While you're at it you could drop in a V8 :grinyes:.

I could, but then I would be like everyone else who has put twin turbos on a v8... I think it would be so much more fun to have it on a v6 so when I pop the hood people would be like...

Maybe down the road I could swap the setup to a v8 instead. But for now I just can't afford to go buy a v8 motor, rebuild it and do this setup... But, If I were to do it to a v8. I would get the money together and buy an LT1 or LS1 and drop it in the Firebird I have right now... Man would that be sweet...

I would just drop in the v8, and save yourself the money ;)

I wish I could, but I just don't have enough money to do it all. lol First comes the completion of the Talon, then all the parts to do the Twin Turbo setup and then we'll see where I am. lol But I just wanna use this thread to see if I know everything I need to know to actually do it when the time comes... Which, for the most part, I think I know almost everything. There is just a few details here and there that I'm unsure of.

Ya man...I think thats the best part, opening the hood to something most people wouldn't think is much, and then giving them that total shock lol. And yes, it will be unique, you have my support on it man. But deffinately take out some of the emissions and A/C, I can't remember who it was that posted that, but I agree...Take out as much as you can to give space and reduce weight.

i would find out if you can get a reprogramed maf to work with bigger injectors. the mustang guys seem to use this setup as their managment and it works. also do you have shorty headers? do they sell them? if so you might be able to flip them so they exit up and toward the front. then add an adapter plate and you have turbo manifolds.

and about the tt inline four. people have done it for cheap and that is the only reason to do it. like let say a freind goes and gets a new 20g for his dsm, you help him install it and convince him to give you his old 14b. so them you go home and fab up a turbo manifold for 2 14b's. now you have a cheap turbo setup that will flow a lot of cfms. i will try to get a picture of a twin turbo i4 manifold and good luck with the firebird
