With reference to the 2005 model year, who designed the engines and transmissions? I've heard that Ford designed the 2.0L and both automatic and manual transmissions, and that Mazda designed the 2.3L. Is this correct?

now, don't quote me on this, but i believe the majority of the disign was used from the 3.0 DOHC in the Taurus and escape and fusion, hense the name duratec, it's possible mazda co developed it, and i do believe that they were the first to use it in the Mazda 3, but i believe that the majority was done by Ford, but again, i could be waaaay off on this one

I think that you might indeed be way off. The duratec in the taurus is a v6 while the duratec in the focus and mazda 3/6 is a 2.3 inline four. Ford has been using the name duratec for years. The 2.0 four in the focus rs was labeled duratec as was the v6 in the svt contour if I remember correctly.

well just because the engine name has been used before dosent mean they aren't similar in many regards, for example the way they cast to block or somthing to that effect, not that i'm saying your wrong, just that you may not have presented a completely valid arguement

I was just curious as to how an inline four was based off of a v6 like the 3.0 in the taurus?

well i'm not saying that the engine is the same, perhaps it has a similar design for the heads (altho 4 not 3) or possibly the block is cast the same way (spun as the metal cools to prevent hotspots and to keep the density of the metal the same al throughout) possibly it has the dual leignth intake runners that the Taurus has, 2 engines don't need to be the same configuration to be related to eachother just like the inline 5 in the jetta and the V10 in the gallardo share some parts and are slightly related to each other

the duratec in the focus was a ford/mazda share project

good call Jordan i admit defeat, but one side note, if all their DOHC engines are called duratec then why is there still the Zetec and the 4.6 and 5.4, all of those engines are DOHC (depending on application) (i'm not trying to argue, i'm curious)

Zetec TECHNICLY ment the car had to have VCT to if you wanna be strict the Focus never had a zetec, and the early contour didnt either.

the new dura 2.0/3 is heavily Zetec design based from what I hear.

so then the new engines don't have vct ether? and i always thought the focus has vct on the intake cam

only the SVT focus had that, and it was a zetec.

the new duratec focus does not have VCT
