Turn Signal Return

MMM-kay heres the scoop.
Ive got a 1989 GMC Suburban and went cruising around town earlyer in my... 1989 GMC Suburban.

Made a left turn and wouldnt ya know it the blinker stayed on:eek7:
has anyone else had this problem with the turn signal return?
I KNOW something is broken inside but i need an idea as to what and how to fix it.

Help from anyone who is smarter than me would be greatly appreciated since i have an IQ of maybe, MAYBE... 2

You probably had one of those 90-degree springs break. They help cancel out the blinker when you make a turn. Or one of ther ears broke off the cancel plate on your directional switch. Most likely it's the spring, which any auto parts store should have for like a buck.

Only thing you will need about $50 in pullers to remove the steering wheel and plate that goes over the directional switch.

Thank you much bob, after i read your post i went to Advance and checked it out, they do have the part for 5 bucks (pack of 2) and i can borrow their puller after i put down a 30 dollar deposit so this is gonna be a cheap fix but anyways do you know after i pull the wheel off how difficult it is to replace the part?

there is a spring for the return thats probably come off or broke in the turn signal switch you have to remove steerng wheel and lock plate which requires some special tools and patience if u have time. itwould
probably easier to take to shop the shouldn't charge u more than a1.5hrs labor to do the job+ the switch
if you can get right tools its not to hard but iwouldnt do it without them
u can cause more damage than u have

im new to this site so i sent first message latebut to answer your next ?
you have to remove wheel compress the lock plate remove snap ring and
remove compress tool remove lock ring then look for how the other spring
is in position then install new spring on the opposite side .then reverse order to put back together if switch is broke you will remove the 4 screws that hold switch in place disconect wires at bottom of colomn andfish them threw as u pull switch out replace and reverse order to go back together

Awesome, i dont know about taking it to a shop, my baby (im gonna regret saying this) is not YET worth that much, but im gonna give it a shot in a couple weeks ty much guys

My money is still on a busted spring. These generally go before the plastic ears on the switch break off. You will need the 2 pullers, I bought mine at a local Auto Barn, the lock plate depression tool was made by Lisle, should go for about $15. I already had a generic steering wheel puller.

The lock plate tool is tricky, should come with a metric and SAE thread adapter, use what fits. You basically attach it to the column and screw down the nut against the u-shaped part of the tool. Pry out the lock wire (not really a true lock ring) and loosen the tool. Once the plate and spring is off you should be able to see the problem right away.

ok so now i hear i need a different special tool to depress a lock plate? i guess those guys didnt want this thing coming apart, who wouldda guessed. i havent really gotten my clothes on for the day (one day off a week) so does anyone know if i could get this tool at advance as well?

This is a link to the lock plate tool that you need. I'm sure that others make it as well, but this is the one I have.

awesome, for 20 bucks id be better off just buying it and hoping something else breaks. my toolbox is a little bare right now, that would be a fine addition to what few tools i have here.

You need to have the wiring fixed. I had this same problem except way worse. Let a street mechanic do it for you becuase the shops would costs around $600.
