I have been looking on-line everywhere for some info on swapping out my 2.0 w/ m transmission for something else (V-6), but nothing is comming out? Am I the first with this idea or am I just plain out of my mind? Is the Mercury Cougar V-6 compatible? Any info would be helpful. Thanx

its way to camped in the engine bay and the weight will throws off the balance of the car.
it sbenn thouhgt of MANY times, but everytime is realized to not bee a good Price vs Power mod, for th price of the swap, and all parts you can build a ZX2 that will make the same HP but more tq. and still have a better front end weight.
Which is why VERY few Zx2 swaps happen (one guy did a SVT focus motor just because he could)

not to mention that the V6 in the cougar is a pos. Ive thought of doing a 2.3l swap that cosworth makes, but its not worth it.

if ANYTHING the 220HP Zetec-R would be the best gain, but its like 6k from what i remeber and you have to see what tranny's you can use.
And its not US emissions legal.

the zx2 trannys are junk. I already went through one at 80k. Any mods for that? The spider gears /differential just grinded apart. Its nothing like an import transmission.

How about some quick mods to beef hp? All I've done is installed a K and N air filter. I'm dying to find out what wire to cut to eliminate the speed shut off too.

there is no wire to cut, AFAIK to diable it, you need a chip.

its EXACTLY like an import tranny, its made by mazda and used in the Mazdaspeed protege.
solution...buy an LSD, but if youve killed a 5spd w/ jsut a K&N i suggest you learn to drive. People have over 200k on there tranny.

I wanna say White/green wire, but you need a switch as it will throw a code because the PCM is getting no speed reading.
this should also work on vct contours as there electrical for the motor shoudl all be the same.

I may be quoting hot air but a buddy told me in his automotive school they got a V-6 from a Chevy tracker to work in a Zx2 I guess because its about the smallest V-6 around. You decide weather to believe him or not. I'm not sure myself if theres even a V-6 offered. Maybe suzuki had one in the Vitara. I'll just stick to Fords thanks.

ZX2 Tranny's are junk? I can't speak for the auto but I've got 252K on my 5 speed with the original clutch and I run it pretty hard. The motor went before the tranny.

I'm kinda pissed that I have to type all of this over again because I hit one stupid button....but anywayz. I say they're junk because of the cheap ass spider gears. I do know how to drive my car smart ass, anywayz. It was a rainy day and I pulled out of work and decided to turn the wheel and give it as much gas as I felt I wanted to. I threw out 1st 2nd and 3rd gear. They were junk and I barely made it home, never mind to the garage where I had to spend $1100 bucks to have a used with 30K put in to replace it. So, if you think that you zx2ners are invinsible, well, son, I got to tell you, try it on a rainy day and you will be in the same predicimate. The trannys do suck!!! I have a zr2 blazer jacked up, and I can cut that wheel in the snow, ice, rain and still be a crazy mf like I wanna and not have a problem with the tranny. Like a rock baby. So if you still have your stock trans, then you haven't driven hard enough. peace. no disrespect. -dan

the point is does the gains out weigh the cost?
if you mean v6 offered zx2? no

maybe if you only gave it what you NEEDED to the tranny would have lasted longer

suck enough the ford escap uses a version of it as does the 170hp mazdaspeed protege w/o troubles.

You cant accurately compair a rwd tranny to a fwd.
I have 50k, about 15 track runs, I beat it daily, and I make more power then you do.....no problems. I also know a guy making 170whp and does a lot of AutoX in it. as are a few 180-200whp turbo cars.

it is under the cup holders where the PCM is, you should wire in an on-off switch.
im not 100% on the colors though

that tubonator is a piece of shit. its the biggest scam going. They guarantee it, but if you send it back they charge a re-stocking fee of 15%? They're making they're money off of the restocking fees, the bastards. Its under that supercharge your ford link. don't be fooled. My mom bought one and it sucks. If anything it made her truck run worse.

Man... you don't got a clue. The spider gears are not shit even romotely. They're made of 4140 heat treated and then case hardened .06 deep. You probably don't have a clue what that means either.
The spider gears are not shit, the differential is shit. It's an open diff for one and for 2 it's a 2 spider diff. 2 things, that when combined are bad news. The tranny isn't shit either... your driving is.

off subject question, as far as i care the motor is fine, ive seen some screammers made into those little zetech dohcs, hell mine beats out my cousins 2.5 cougar, (2000 model) on base and some midrange pull, and both ours are autos. then again mine ive had balanced and added a gude.com head and cam. but does anyone know how much the stock auto can take before i start breakin crap? im thinken of adding a turbo or just finding another zx2 with a stick and transplanting
AltecZX2

stock power will break it.
i broke my auto tranny at 19,000 b4 any mods
i have friends on there 5th trany with less power then you......lthe auto does NOT last long at all. if you get a 5spd you will need to strengthen the diff in someway....having a crappy ford auto and a mazda 5spd are the weakpoint in this car.

how did it go out? too many neutral drops? my auto has held up ok to what ive put it through (granted i dont do reverse drops, neutral drops... well burnouts of any kind, i just dont see the use in it< blowing someone away at the line is a different story). i have heard lots of stories though, about just how crappy the atx is. i just want to know the symptoms of it going so i know when it is about to go.

i'll devbate that..i never did any N drops or even raced in my auto..and teh tranny went at 20k. my frined had just boltons on his auto, and never raced..tranny went at 40k.....
zx2 autos are known to go about ever 25-30k, unless VERY well kept.

i havnt done any n drops, or spun the tires much... i have tromped it a couple times. but nothing too serious.
what would a kick dictate to you there altec. when i put it in gear, in particular reverse, and i use no gas whatsoever, and the car will grab and literally jerk backwards. this also happens in drive, but not as severe.

what will they do to it and how much might it cost?
zx2guy
02-19-2006, 10:55 AM
stick: requires unbolting the tranny from the engine, (they may be able to do it in car, or maybe not), from there the clutch assembly is bolted to the back of the motor, that is removed, new goes in, everything is bolted back up. that is the quick and clean version, it can get real complicated real fast if things arent going your way. cost.... depends clutch cost+ labor= total, depends on the shop.
auto: got no fricken idea. working on autos scare the crap out of me.

thats ussually the reason you either use lots of 4 letter words... or invent some during the removal and installation. its all about the lack of room, thus even though i can do this stuff myself at work... uhh no, because then i wont have anyone to yell if i screw up my own car.
