A new Thread on ECM's

Since the ECM's have been brought up, I saved that till last, to check for my problems. I pulled mine tonight and opened it up and it looked like brand new inside. Jeeeez, I only wished my desktop was that clean.

I went over pretty much all the components, soldered to it and all shown continuity. All the contacts looked clean. No discoloration or sign of getting hot. So here is my line of questions:

1: Where is the best source to have one tested?

2: Are there any chips on it, that are programable? (I believe
the injector portion of mine, may be malfunctioning.)

3: If so, can you set parameters for the pulse width? That seems to
be my issue, at start up and when it's warm.

Here are the numbers on mine:

I learned that if your car does not have an EGR on the engine, then it's built into the ECM. (Doesn't make sense to me)

Anyhow, I think this may be the biggest cause of the lousy gas milage, that some of you here are experiencing. Here is why I say this. To date, I have replaced:

MAP Sensor
Fuel Injector Resistor
TPS
ECT
Injector
FPR
O2 Sensor
Air Filter
Spark Plugs
Rotor, Cap and wires.
Timing is spot on
The engine runs strong, even at 180 k

All of the shit that I've done, so far, has got me from 21 to 26 miles to the gallon. My biggest increase came, when I went through the throttle body, but the car still uses almost twice as much fuel as it should be. Crazy thing is, the car runs great, once it's warmed up, but at start up, it uses as much gas as a 454 Chevy, plus it does run rich while it's warm too.

Tomorrow, I may just put my ECM back in and take it to a shop, to get hooked up to a diagnostic computer and see what THEY find. I'm like DoctorBill here.....it's that damned Metronol. LOL

Metronol? More likely a damned neo-con plot to reset all us "tree-hugging" metro drivers cars ECM's to "normal" gasoline consumption, and get us on-line with the rest of America's fuel consuming ways. Gotta keep the economy afloat somehow, eh? And just cause I live in Canada, doesn't mean I don't get my share of nasty looks for driving a low emmision vehicle. Try living in the Texas of Canada, where everything is paid for by oil money.

Cool response there. I had to read it twice to understand it. Don't worry, it's not you.....it's Adolph Coors. I'd like to know one thing. Why did they put a computer in a car that is this small?? These damned computers are intended for cars to run more efficient. I can safely say, that a Metro engine is tiny enough that the computer would not be of much help, plus, if there wasn't one there to begin with, there would be 80% less headaches with these cars. A car, with an engine the size of my friggin lunchbox does not need all these electronic sensors. I can see it on a 4.0 liter V6 or bigger, but a Geo Metro?? There were Millions of cars before the Geo Metro, built without those gadgets and they were very fuel efficient and low on "emissions"

Oh well, this car has tought me a lot about the finer parts of being a mechanic. LOL It's a nice ride, I'll deal with it and figure it out.

Have you checked the CTS or the wiring to it?

Yea, my CTS is new and there was no change. I kinda like Blake's Idea. I think I'll check and see what the vacuum guage shows. After running rich all this time, I bet the cat is probably plugged. It seemed like there was excessive gas in the throttle body
