Why do you call a canister. Its just a screw in filter right? Not a dry sump pan and a external oil pump?

If so I would look at the oil pressure in both engines, amount of flow. But even if the values are the same i would do it, because there might be different bypass valve ratings or different capacity. Unless you its perfectly fine do s and they are interchangable.

i`m talking about the whole component that holds the oil filter not just the oil filter itself in the front right hand side of the engine. i think thats how they call it not sure

What are the engines in the cars? And why would you replace the whole thing?

the engine on the 1994 525i is the 2.5 liter l6 same as the 1994 325i the only difference thats noticeable is the oil pan iknows there is more but i just cant see it. i had to change the whole thing because i had a serious oil leak located in that part. it was not the seal i changed that too.it was almost like it couldn hold the pressure when i accelerate the car it leaks even worse.

Common problem. There's a plug at the back that's made of steel, while the housing is made of aluminum. Over time, a leak develops because of the dissimilar metals expanding and contracting. The housings should be identical, same engine. I'd give it a try.
