Ummm RIIIIGGGGGHHHTTTTT

Are either one of you running a tach? Redline on those trucks is 5500 rpm and it is very hard to get one to rev to even 4500 rpm on a good rebuilt stock engine. 5,000 rpm in 3rd gear is around 65 mph, the truck's peak torque is at less then 3,000 rpm and peak hp is around 4500-4800 on a stock engine.

Most people who think they are revving to 5,000 rpm are really revving it to about 3,000-3500 rpm and there is no reason to rev it much past that.

There are several reasons why the stock truck has a very hard time reaching higher rpms. One is the poorly designed stock carburetor, another is the stock exhaust system. Distributor timing and curve is slightly retarded for emission purposes and engine overheat issues.

Most of these trucks have a mechanical fuel pump. At high rpms the internal spring cannot control the pump arm fast enough and it starts to float which causes fuel pressure fluctuations. Many of those trucks (The older B2000s being the exception) had hydraulic lash adjustors instead of mechanical which are known to also loose control past about 3500 rpm which causes fluctuations in valve lift and duration as they give out then pump back up.
