I have a 95 Cavalier 2.2l that on rare occassions wont start when the engine has sat over night. The Engine cranks well, it's getting gas and a spark but will not fire and turn over. If I let the car sit for about 30 - 45 minutes then it usually starts without a problem. It only done this about 5 or 6 times over the last 2 years ,but its done it twice in the last week. I been getting a ocasonial check engine light When the cars first run for a while in the morning ,but the light usallly goes off.
Any Ideas to what may be the problem. Ive changed the O2 sensor and the plugs and the light still coms on! I dont know if this is the problem. I cant get to the coil back in the back of the engine to remove the spark plug wires to change them. What's the easiest way to get at the coil pack at the back of the engine? Do I have to jack it up and crawl under or what?
I went to Advance auto parts and they told me their scanner only works on 98 and newer. Im confused to whether I have OBD 1 or 2 cause the connector shown in my Manual is a eight pin connector , but the one I have is a 16 pin connector. 2 on the top row located together and 2 on the bottom on each end. The books all say I should have OBD 1 but I had advice from this forum that it's odb 2.
Do I need a scanner to read the codes or can I use a jumper wire. I would appreciate you recommendtions and comments.

I am having the exact same problem. Did you ever get yours fixed? When I got the check engine light codes, when was related to a fuel issue and the other was something like quad driver module. Its starting to happen more frequently.

The code I got was a 32 for a EGR Signal, I found a broken vacuum line, these things use those new plastic lines. The Starting problem hasnt happened in a while now, other than that the car runs fine . I looked up the trouble shooting chart for it. It could be the crankshaft positon sensor or the timing chain starting to go. Mine gets Gas and spark but just wont turn over unless you let it sit for a while. If the sensor is going bad it would crank and not turn over, from what I've been reading. Yours maybe something else. The EGR system consists of alot of components, the EGR valve, the solenoid on the (95), the PCM and a whole bunch of sensors.
