Could be rusty rotors. The pads always drag a little and if there was some rust on the rotors it might cause the noise you were hearing. Did it go away after a few applications of the brakes?

but this was a sound that was being heard without applying the brakes

as even though the car is free moving, there was something rubbing

The brake pads are always dragging on the rotors a little. Its just that they don't normally make a sound because the rotor is relatively smooth. When you get flash rust on the rotors, those dragging pads sound a lot worse.
