Gas Leaking -$1010 to fix

The dealership says the gas tank and the fuel pump module are leaking on my 96 jimmy. The pump was working fine, I was hoping it was just a gas line.

The fuel pump is $440 dollars- ouch! I thought I'd let you guys know...

I would not go to a dealer for this service. I got my punp here for about $175 not genuine GM part its aftermarket company but has been working fine for 2 years http://www.wdautoparts.com/index.php?page=locations

I also pick up a southern tank rust free for $150 and installed myself, most independent shops should be able to fix yours for $600 or less. Sometimes the plastic fitting on the pump cracks and they have repair kits for that so it could be even less.

I should have gone to another shop. I originally thought it was fuel lines and I didn't want to do that myself. I think that this gas stuff is best left to the mechanic, plus I hear it is a pain to drop the tank.

Sounds more like you need the entire sending unit for that price.



What sucked for me is my fuel pump went out. No biggie, until it was realized that the top of the sending unit had rusted out too!


Of course about 3 month later the gas tank started to leak!


I could have bought a new 30 gallon tank with pump and sending unit installed for less than the 2 fixes combined!


But, I did go with a plastic 20 gallon tank so it won't rust out again like s-10 tanks do!

Opps I sent a link to just there locations, anyways I got a brand new sending unit pump whole works just like GM unit from them but made in Mexico for about $175. I live in the Buffalo NY rust belt and there are places here that specifically sell used southern gas tanks and have all kinds of fixes for lines because they all rust out up here. the places that sell the parts will also install them and most vehicles are $600 at the most and usually slightly lower.

They are replacing the whole fuel pump/ regulator/ module combo because aparently it doesn't come in seperate pieces.

I guess the lines and the pump were all rusted. They thought there was a hole in the gas return line becuase the outside appeared so rusty. However they said the lines can be reused.

Do a google search for your fuel tank.
I bought my 20 gallon for less than $100.00 new. The F.I tanks cost a little more through that company, but they were only up to $120.00 or so.

Sorry that I didn't keep the company's name saved, and they didn't send me a bill :shakehead making it tough to clear customs.

on the ground the tanks are a bitch to drop, in the shop, we hoist it, get a tranny jack and let the straps fly (not exactly that simple, but you get the idea) the price you got quoted was the whole sender, if they do just the pump, then 6 months or a year later the sender takes a shit, they (in your mind) going to be the dirtyist sob's to ever walk, wouldn't have taken it to the dealer for work, parts are the same price from a delco dealer, sometimes cheeper, and no aftermarket shop gets the 85 an hour the dealer wants, the highest around here is 60 at an aftermarket shop, sorry to hear about the pump/sender, but it does happen to all of us

I went to Buffalo a few years ago . Crossed the peace bridge when it was all boarded up , ended up at the border with a pistol in the glovebox (Southern custom) What a bad day that was . Glad they sent me on my way after a couple of hours . Rob

Hey now, that's a stereotype, not all southerners carry pistols in their gloveboxes..... I keep one in a zippercase beside the seat and one in the center console, but not in the glovebox..... that's for ammo. :iceslolan

JCWhitney has the tanks in plastic@ 20 gallons for 175 bucks. Same price as their chintzy metal ones that rust off the car.


If you need to drop a tank at home, a bigger pad on the floor jack will work or a 2x10 piece of scrap lumber about 18" long will hold the tankwithout letting it get wild on you, make sure to drain the tank if you can or run it dry.
