i have a 2000 ram that has 170,000 kilos on it and has had the tranny rebuilt twice the last time about 20,000 kilos ago.the tranny is now starting to act up again.i was 1.5 hours into a 3 hour drive home when the OD off light came on in the dash and about 15 minutes later while driving at a reduced speed the trans temp light came on so i pulled in and shut off the truck for ten minutes to let it cool off.I started the truck and the lights had gone out so i continued . well i wasn't driving for long (10 minutes) when the same thing happened again. What should have taken 1.5 hours turned into 3 hours. After the first time the trans temp light came on i would shut down the engine before it came so i would not overheat the tranny. as soon as the OD off light would come on i would pull in and shut down the engine for ten minutes. The button to turn the OD on and off had no effect when the OD off light was on. Tried the truck the next day same thing happened.360 engine.would really appriciate any advice.

Hi bleedDodge the truck is a 2000 slt extended cab 4x4 with a 360 engine. The trans was completly rebuilt (new valve body, tork converter) when it had 140,000 kilos on it. Thanks for any help you can offer

Did the check engine light ever come on?

I would venture to say that the check valve in that one transmission line has blocked. I think it's in the return line? Not sure. Anyways the valve plugs and it doesn't let the cooled trans fluid back to the transmission, and in turn it heats up. Similar idea to a blocked thermostat in a cooling system.

My truck doesn't have the check valve and if it's cold the truck won't move until it gets some trans fluid circulating. I guess after every time it sits, the torque converter drains. If you go out on a cold morning and start it in Park and then right away throw it into drive, it probably won't move. I start it in neutral and let it warm up and it works good.

The check engine light came on a few weeks before this tranny trouble started.I got the code read and it was a loose fuel tank cover. The engine light did not come since. I have removed the ball from the check valve. I am going to change the oil and filter in the morning then take it for a road test. I am using ATF+4 for the change. Can you do a flush of the tranny without taking it to a transmission shop. Possibly using compressed air? I will let you know now the test goes.

I've heard of guys blowing the lines out, I have no idea how well it works.

If changing the fluid doesn't help, disconnect the battery for the fun of it. See if it does anything.

I changed the oil and filter, removed the ball from the check valve in one of the trans line, and blew out the oil cooler and rad.I took it for a two hour road test and everything seems to be working OK. No lights coming on . Thanks for all your help.
