83 Continental Mark VI won't shift from first

Anybody got any ideas why my car won't shift from first to second? Sometimes it will but it's only if i've got the rpms high and it's a hard jerk shift. It also jerks into gear when I go from neutral to drive. I went on a short road trip with it a couple days before this started happening. Could that have caused this to happen? Thanks in advance for any info.
