'98 Avalon Power Steering fluid:

We own an Avalon with 77000 miles on it and with a extended warranty or we would be broke... It has been an okay car, though I don't have much faith in it and will sell it before the extended warranty is up. The power steering says to use Dextron type ATF on the cap. Can we use any type of ATF or does it specifically have to be that brand? I've been using Pennzoil ATF for high mileage cars, but I looked at it tonight and the darn thing looks like it spit up the fluid on the inside of the engine compartment near the alternator and ABS system? The reservoir was half empty?

Thanks a lot for any suggestions and have a wonderful night.

R.

Dexron is a fluid type, Pennzoil is a brand name. I would recommend Dexron III Mercon type fluid. If you overfill the power steering fluid, it's gonna blow out. Check the fluid level with the dipstick..

Okay. I understand. Will look for that then. It states ATF though. With what you're talking about is that ATF?

ATF is short for Automatic Transmission Fluid. There are many different types from Type F to Dexron to ATF-3. So if your looking for the Dexron type for your power steering, make sure the bottle states "Dexron III Mercon".
