How-to:Spraybooth (finally)

Well i finally got around to building one, sorta. this is just a crude mock-up. i will play with the design and when im happy with the performance i will build it out of 3/4" Maple plywood. this is made of R-max rigid insulative board from Home Depot. the total cost of materials was under $40 bucks. the basic dimensions were made to fit a window opened 9 inches. size varies depending on window.

Materials
1-3" 90 degree elbow
1-4'X8' sheet of rigid foam board ( R/max, Dow etc...)
1-roll of QUALITY duct tape
1-flourescent light 18"-24"
1-8" bathroom vent fan w/ 3' exhaust ( i used Broan*)

***** bathroom fans are NOT rated as non-spark, and are NOT rated for removing cuastic fumes so be careful. spend more for non-spark fan. like i said, this is a prototype fan will be replaced though i havent had any problems yet.*****

heres a picture of the side and basic shape. this will change as i find better ways to make this work better . though it has been an improvement already. less dust. less paint waste.less fumes.

all pieces were cut out with a razor knife and put together with duct tape haha. i will make changes and update until i have the perfect booth. but for now, enjoy!!!

Basically the same setup as mine, except I used a PC Case fan, and my booth is just one of those big-ass blue tupperware containers you get at wal mart for storing stuff.

The fan is crappy, but it is brushless so safe. I really need to replace it though. Where CAN you get a good 6-8" fan that's brushless?

You can get a kitchen hood fan or look for a dealer that sells atoumotive paint supplies, they might have one. basically you will need to look for a fan for industrial or lab use.

Jaymes: i cant promise 0% but lets say this, Sarah would always come home and complain that the house smells like paint. she doesnt anymore.

Also this is just a prototype so i will tweak the design a bit and keep you all updated.

Looks like a nice way to avoid having my bicycle, extra motorcycle wheels, skimboard and freezer with paint dust! :grinyes:

Brushless motors have no brushes in them, and thus do not create sparks when used. Spark + paint fumes = explosion.

Here's my spraybooth...total cost about $20.
Stole both the MDF and squirrel cage fan were stole from my Dad's barn :grinno: All I had to pay for were the duct fittings and the hose.

Well kitchen hoods would see grease, which is highly flammable, so I would assume (nay, HOPE) that they're sealed or brushless.

I tried to find a fan for my booth today at home depot but no luck. The kitchen hood fans seemed to be my best bet, but you can't buy them seperate of the hood!

ARGH I can't find a cheap fan anywhere. I wonder if anyone still makes those big 6" case fans, and if they're brushless like the smaller ones... :uhoh:

Same problem here. kitchen hoods are $$$ and you cant just buy the fan. Radio Shack used to be great for this stuff but they dont sell all the electronics stuff they used too. cell phones are all they seem to care about now. again i would look on-line for a Lab supply company near you cus they would have just what you need. good luck and if you find something let me know! i think 6 to 8" is perfect for what we need.

Also, ive been using the Broan bathroom fan for awhile and no fires yet but its sketchy. and kitchen fans are spark free because of grease like you said.

Oh just a thought....

they make blower fans for wood furnaces and pellet stoves. would these be safe as they must have safety features to prevent fire???? just a thought.

if you want a hood call a kitchen contractor in your area and ask them if they have any jobs coming up. We used to just throw out working hoods 3-5 a week when i did carpentry.
